The musical ideas in this three-movement suite were inspired by the landscapes I experienced during my visits to this incredible place. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe first movement represents the drive through the valley and up into the Cascade mountain range, where the roads are full of twists and turns and elevation changes. Despite the ups and downs of the land itself, the drive is smooth and offers sweeping vistas and seemingly never-ending waves of trees down below. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe second movement reflects on the devastating effects of wildfires caused by climate change. Driving through the valley, it is easy to see the areas that have been damaged and, in some cases, completely burned to the ground because of uncontrollable forest fires. The water level of the reservoir I visited was at less than 10%. The long-lasting implications of this kind of environmental change moved me to tears and inspired this tender, emotionally-charged music. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn contrast, the third movement offers a playful, quirky finale to the suite, depicting the abundance of adventure to be found in the Rogue Valley. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis work was written for the Hogtown Brass Quintet with funding support from the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.on.ca\/home\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOntario Arts Council\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, an agency of the Government of Ontario. The music depicts a place where two rivers connect and join each together, combining the waters of each. The water is always in motion, dancing and weaving around the curves of the river bed, reflecting colours and light as it moves. As each river flows, it carries with it the histories of all living things that interact with it, and when the rivers meet, all of these stories flow into each other to create a body of water even more beautiful and powerful. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis piece was commissioned by the Lisgar Collegiate Institute Flute Ensemble (Ottawa, Canada), directed by Lani Sommers. The ideas for this music were generated in collaboration with the students of this ensemble. The school is situated along one of the major rivers in the area, so the students suggested that I explore the symbolism of water and how it could represent their experiences. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis project was made possible thanks to support from the Ottawa Flute Association and the Ronald Duck Memorial Scholarships from the Ottawa Kiwanis Music Festival. We aimed to provide a meaningful creative experience for the student community during a difficult time when no live music making could take place. It is my hope that this piece will continue to be a reminder of the resilience of young people and the importance of arts education.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis adaptation for clarinets is dedicated to Laura Campbell, who embodies all that this piece represents. As the clouds shift and move overhead, the sunlight dances around the edges of the clouds and teases the release of its warmth. When the clouds finally break, the sun pours through the sky for just a brief and glorious moment before being hidden again. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis experience is reflected musically in the harmonic tension and syncopated rhythms throughout this piece. The concept for \u003cem\u003ewhen the clouds break \u003c\/em\u003ecame to me while improvising using three simple chords: G, D, and C, in a I-V-IV progression. I wondered if I could build a short piece around these chords, incorporating colourful suspensions and added tones throughout, only giving the pure form of each chord later in the piece as a long-awaited resolution (this moment occurs at rehearsal letter E). As I played around with these ideas, I was reminded of the moments of tension and release found both in nature and in the human experience.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis piece was released in 2020, when the COVID-19 global pandemic caused some pretty serious cloud cover over us all. The original version is performed frequently by concert bands worldwide, and is included on several festival repertoire lists and syllabi. This piano version was created during the COVID-19 pandemic, during which the music community was forced to completely reimagine its approach to music-making. We created this solo version of the piece so that individual musicians could bring it to life in a new way.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eChasing Sunlight \u003c\/em\u003ewas inspired by the experience of driving west into the setting sun, as if trying to keep up with the earth’s rotation to catch the last few rays of light before dark. The steady eighth note motif throughout the piece represents this sense of urgency, while the soaring, lyrical themes depict the warmth and radiance of the sun low in the sky. Just as the sun will always set, we must accept the impermanence of all things in life, and make the most of every opportunity before it has passed. \u003cem\u003eChasing Sunlight \u003c\/em\u003ealso represents this ongoing pursuit of these opportunities.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne dollar from every purchase of this piece will be donated to the Nature Conservancy of Canada. This piece was inspired by an exciting and rewarding journey through Yosemite National Park to reach the Glacier Point overlook before sundown. Driving up the steep mountain roads felt like a race against time, with the sunset already in progress. Along the way, we experienced jaw-dropping vistas over the edge of rocky cliffs; the colours in the sky shifted from vibrant blue and orange to hazy pink and purple. We drove through extensive areas of forest damaged by recent wildfires– a visceral reminder of the impacts of our changing climate and the need for balance in nature. When we arrived at the lookout, we were rewarded with a magnificent and exhilarating view of Half Dome and Yosemite Valley set against a glowing sky (as shown on the cover of this score!) It was perfect timing to witness the last moments of sunset before the sky faded calmly into dusk.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eGolden Hour \u003c\/em\u003ewas first written for horn and piano before being transcribed for a variety of other solo instruments. I met with the band, heard them play, answered their questions about being a composer, and invited them to tell me what their band experiences meant to them so that I could create a special piece inspired by their stories. This forest fire forced the evacuation of 88,000 people and had lasting impacts on all who call Fort McMurray home.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFort McMurray is situated within the Boreal Forest, which is a bioregion that supports an extensive network of plants, animals, and fungi. The coniferous forests of this region are resilient and, in many cases, have adapted to depend on re for regeneration. Some species have cones which only release seeds under extreme heat; a forest re can set this cycle of the forest into motion. I began thinking of the wind as a life force; an expression of aliveness coming from the mountains in the form of birdsong, flowing water, hills and valleys, and sparkling sunlight. Along the way, we experienced jaw-dropping vistas over the edge of rocky cliffs; the colours in the sky shifted from vibrant blue and orange to hazy pink and purple. We drove through extensive areas of forest damaged by recent wildfires– a visceral reminder of the impacts of our changing climate and the need for balance in nature. When we arrived at the lookout, we were rewarded with a magnificent and exhilarating view of Half Dome and Yosemite Valley set against a glowing sky (as shown on the cover of this score!) It was perfect timing to witness the last moments of sunset before the sky faded calmly into dusk.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eGolden Hour \u003c\/em\u003ewas originally composed for horn and piano in 2020 and was later transcribed for several other solo instruments. When I was a high school student, I participated in the Ontario Provincial Honour Band and performed at the annual OMEA conference. It was a formative experience during which I was surrounded by others who were there out of a genuine desire to share their love of music -- a beautiful example of “intrinsic” motivation. It has been ten years since I graduated from my high school music program, and five years since completing my post-secondary studies in music, and I am endlessly grateful to have been part of the music education community in Ontario. The Ojibwe\/Anishinaabe name for the lake is gitchigami or gichigaaming, meaning “great sea”. This piece was conceptualized during camping trips at each of the five parks, and is meant to express transformative experiences through music and highlight the power of nature connection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e1. Through meter changes and driving ostinatos, the music in \u003cem\u003ePukaskwa \u003c\/em\u003erepresents the sense of wonder, adventure, and determination involved in hiking precarious cliffs to breathtaking views.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e3. Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, the northernmost park included in this piece, is named after a landform that resembles a giant lying on its back. This is the park in which the composer interacted with the most wildlife, experienced the most extreme jaw-dropping views, and witnessed the most beautiful moments in nature. \u003cem\u003eSleeping Giant’s\u003c\/em\u003e disjunct melodies, shifts in timbre, and unexpected rhythmic patterns represent this experience.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e4. Neys Provincial Park was formerly a prisoner of war camp and a processing site for Japanese-Canadians who were interned and forcibly relocated from British Columbia to Ontario during WWII. Much of the old growth forest was cut down to build the POW camp, and trees were later re-planted in rows. The Ojibwe\/Anishinaabe name for the lake is gitchigami or gichigaaming, meaning “great sea”. This piece was conceptualized during camping trips at each of the five parks, and is meant to express transformative experiences through music and highlight the power of nature connection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe opening movement, \u003cem\u003ePancake Bay, \u003c\/em\u003edepicts endlessly flowing waves, soaring birds, peaceful rays of light, and the first glimpse of the vastness of Lake Superior.
