Much like some of the more dysfunctional, wild, and certainly entertaining writers’ rooms on television from the past, the music is constantly introducing new ideas, exhausting them to their logical breaking points, and finally tossing them aside in favor of newer, sexier ideas – sometimes shockingly and abruptly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThroughout the piece, there are moments of exciting momentum, as if one particular idea works well enough to run with, moments of absurdity, as if one of the crazier writers decided to shout out the first idea that came to their head (known as a ‘wildie’), and there are also, as expected, many moments of bitter argument and chaos, where nobody can agree on what the piece is actually about. In \u003cem\u003eValse Kinetic\u003c\/em\u003e, I sought to capture something of that atmosphere: an orchestral work that channels Brahms channeling Bach. Towards the very beginning, when I was suddenly out of a job and wracked with every possible worry, Susan turned to me and said, \"hey: let's go see the Big Lady\" (our loving household name for Superior.) As tense as I was, I agreed — and as soon as I waded into the (at the time, very cold) Lake, I immediately felt calmer. After that, we made a point of walking down to the Lake almost daily, and she never failed to lighten things a bit. This piece is meant to evoke both sides of the Big Lady: the grandest side of Superior, undeniable, unpredictable, dangerous — and the tender, personal side, the side that reminds you about the scope and the importance of things.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis project also kicked off a larger project, the Homes Concerti: a set of five concerti, each one representing its own Great Lake. Because of their rich infrastructure of marsh plants, algae, and insects, shorelines attract a tremendous array of birds, all of whom play important roles in maintaining watershed biodiversity. Any number of human impacts—erosion, deforestation, chemical waste—can upset the natural equilibrium of a shoreline, threatening the migratory patterns, habitat, and reproduction of the area’s birds. In the case of the Lake Erie shoreline, the focus of this work, avian populations plummeted with the rise of massive industrialization in the 19th and 20th centuries, suffocated by deforestation and depletion of prey. Only after sizeable climate activism in response to climate disasters—including the Cuyahoga River Fire of 1969, in which pollutants on the river caught fire and burned for hours—did the tide begin to turn for Erie, a renewed health especially signaled by one key factor: the reemergence of its bird populations.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cb id=\"docs-internal-guid-9167292d-7fff-2d18-0913-a763e437ce6b\"\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cem\u003eDouble Aviary\u003c\/em\u003e draws a three-movement arc through all of this. In First Aviary, we see an unspoiled image of the shore before industrial intervention, built upon the song of an Erie native, the red-winged blackbird; in a second, unnamed movement, we follow the cycle of human error that never self-corrects until the weight of its short-sightedness is too grave to ignore; and the last movement, Second Aviary, depicts a (not-so-distant) future in which the watershed flourishes again in earnest, an intentional and thoughtful equilibrium, reviving the songs from native Erie birds. On a personal note, my discovery of the myriad tastes of cheese (after outgrowing a lifelong allergy to milk shortly before composing this work), contributed to my idea of focusing on a single harmonic ingredient as a means of yielding a world of distinct tastes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eThe second movement, “Games,” looks at the ensemble as a group of individuals all playing one small part in creating a larger gesture or action. The movement’s structure traverses across a range of playful, humorous games, all linked together associatively by a sonic game of tag. We begin by tossing a ball up very high, watching it almost disappear, and then as it gains momentum, lands down again in one’s hand. The tossing turns to kicking which turns into dancing. The tossing\/catching ultimately returns and subtly transforms to the sound of feet walking. I thought of how the act of walking is a complex yet beautiful process of many muscles, bones, ligaments and neurons all working perfectly together to help us move forward.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eAt its emotional heart, \u003cem\u003eChamber Concerto\u003c\/em\u003e is a personal contemplation on the idea of America, and how pain and comedy, deep thought and play can be juxtaposed in daily life. At the end, the work tenuously quotes the traditional tune, “America,” over a texture that evokes the quiet un-pitched sounds of walking. It reprises this texture from my composition, \u003cem\u003eMissing Words IV\u003c\/em\u003e, that responds to Ben Schott’s invented German word, “Erkenntnisspaziergang” – defined as a walk taken for the purpose of deep contemplation. It reminded me of a visit I made to my friend’s property in Vermont a few years prior, on an invitation to come and “meet” the trees that are so dear to him. He told me how at his age he now speaks with them and hoped they might speak to me. Adjacent to these were the ruins of the ancient city, the walls of homes that now stood no more than a foot high, the mosaic floor tiles still largely intact and the road that cut through the center of the town still showing the wagon ruts from hundreds of years past. Walking through these remnants of a time long-abandoned and imagining the lives that once flourished where I stood, and all those who had visited since, ignited my musical imagination. Stephenson (2010) 10'\u003cbr\u003efor chamber orchestra\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eWritten in celebration of the 48th Anniversary season of the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, Edward Benyas, conductor and premiered in September of 1999\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the fall of 1999, I was contacted by my good friend Edward Benyas, with a request to compose a new work to celebrate the 48th anniversary of the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, for a concert he would be conducting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe piece needed to be completed in 2 weeks, needed to feature the timpanist, and would be used to celebrate a 48th anniversary.\u003cbr\u003eThough it was a challenge to write this piece in only 2 weeks, I have very fond memories of sitting on the porch of a cabin in Northern Michigan, overlooking a lake, while writing this work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe reason for featuring the timpanist for the concert was because he was a mutual friend and would be driving a good deal to get to the performance. In order to play the concert, he would be driving hours from one gig, unloading timpani, then driving elsewhere, playing another job, then driving back to the first, playing, reloading timpani, etc… In other words, I needed to reward him with a good part for all of the extra hassles he’d be going through just to play the concert.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe 48th anniversary dedication presented a rather fun challenge and inspiration. Puns and symbolism have always been a part of my “game” when writing music, and so I took advantage of whatever I could with the number 48 (or 48th) when composing this piece. For example, the piece opens with a flurry of 40 eighth-notes in the strings (I was going to go for 48 notes, but it didn’t work, so I settled for forty 8th notes instead). Additionally, the harmonic structure of the piece is almost entirely built upon a minor 7th chord; this is because when one counts up 4 semi-tones from the root of the chord, and then another 8, the resulting notes spell out most of a minor 7th chord. [Example: C up to E-flat, and then again up to B-flat]. Lastly, the one of the main themes is a very catchy tune written to the time signature of 4\/8.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOf course, all of the games and symbolism are fruitless unless the piece stands on its own musically. The piece was an interactive and engaging showcase for the orchestra, demonstrating the instruments and sections of the orchestra with a fast-paced script and exciting demonstrations of the sounds of a symphony. The highlight of the piece was a demonstration of how composers put melody, harmony, and rhythm together, culminating with volunteers from the audience composing and premiering a new piece of music on the spot. Compose Yourself! – in its original form – has been a successful educational demonstration for orchestras across the globe, with now over 350 performances having taken place in the last 20 years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLooking for further ways to engage the audience, Stephenson wrote a new and fanciful story to go along with the music already composed. This new story became “Once Upon a Symphony”, and tells the story of Sally and her adventurous trip with her grandfather. They encounter all sorts of delightful musical treats on their journey, with visual and sonic delights surrounding them at every turn. In trying to find “the opposite of” spring, I read with interest the myth of Persephone. We first see Persephone picking flowers in the field, when suddenly she is abducted by Hades and taken on a chariot-ride to the Underworld. In response, a grief-stricken Demeter, Persephone’s mother, causes a worldwide famine. Ironically, Persephone actually begins to like her new role as “Queen” of the Underworld, and even falls in love with Hades. There begins a conflict between the gods: Zeus\/Demeter vs. Hades over who gets to “keep” Persephone. Eventually, a compromise is reached, and it is agreed that Persephone will stay with Hades part of the year (fall\/winter), and return above-ground for spring and summer (hence Appalachian Spring).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMusically, I always found the last three flute notes of Appalachian Spring interesting, because they are the only time those notes appear in that pattern. Therefore, I decided to start my piece with those three notes, and make them my “Persephone motif”. Copland’s work! also has a relationship between A and C Major, so I likewise keep that minor-3rd relationship alive using C and E . (The Persephone motif fits nicely into those keys as well.) Because the piece starts still in springtime (picking flowers), my music is very Copland-esque on purpose, as if we are still in that world. Like Copland, I also draw upon an American folk-tune – “Home, Sweet Home” – for material throughout the piece. Notably, whenever the chorus of “Sweet, Sweet Home” is played with regard to the Underworld, it descends; but as we return to above-ground, it ascends. A couple of times, especially when we are furthest away from “Spring”, I add very iconic\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eAppalachian Spring\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003echords to remind us that the entire piece is based on Copland’s genius, and that we will eventually get back there!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLastly, although I conceived this as a “prequel,” I could imagine it being played after the Copland as well – or by itself. The seasons are cyclical, of course, so the order isn’t necessarily mandatory; and Persephone ends up-tempo and with much vigor, in case that sort of finality is preferred. Through music, I want to share those stories and invite listeners into that world.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eRevisiting these tales now as an adult has been surprising. As a child, I understood them in very black and white terms. There was a good side and a bad side, and someone always had to win. But with age, I have started to feel that life does not work like that. I used to love or hate things instantly. I was impatient and intolerant of complexity. Now I try to pause, to notice the other side, even if I do not always succeed.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis story in particular has stayed with me for years. When I was young, I absolutely believed the bunny must live. And of course, he should. But now I also think about the tiger. Hunger is real. Consequences are real. And while the bunny is clever, he also uses cruelty to escape danger. As children, we were told he was witty and quick, and he is. But the story also carries another layer I could not see back then.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe music follows the story closely, like a tone poem, unfolding across twelve narrative sections. I am happy to share this Korean folktale through my music. This was a song my sister and I sang, always in unison, ever since we were very small.
