The one I chose tells of how three doves created the world (the text,transliteration, and translation are all below). The text given below comes from a version taken from the Halychyna region in Western Ukraine. There are many different versions of this koliadka, and ethnomusicologists date its creation back to more than one thousand years ago (a version has been documented in the Chronicles of the Kyivan Rus’ state from the tenth century AD).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome \u003cem\u003ekoliadky\u003c\/em\u003e are now sung at Christmas, along with songs more intentionally Christian. In some regions of Ukraine, even today, the two holidays have blurry boundaries. The word in standard Ukrainian is Rizdvo; in some dialects, Christmas is still referred to as “Koliada”, as some will wish you “Khrystos rodyvsia! [Bazhaju tobi] veseliu koliadu!” (Christ is born! Each of the work's three movements connect a different instrumental sound world to the concepts of earth, air, and fire, depicting a blossoming of kindness and hope for the future of our planet. The first movement, \"Flower Power,\" is inspired by the titular social movement of the 1960s–1970s and sonically critiques the juxtaposition of fragility and strength, beauty and utility, and nonviolence and force. \"Flower Power\" reflects the ethos of Marc Riboud's iconic photograph\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eThe Ultimate Confrontation: The Flower and the Bayonet\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eand incorporates a musical Easter egg—a countermelody for counterculture. The second movement, \"Star-Crossed,\" summons the hope, whimsy, and longing of its ill-fated protagonists through celestial textures and luminous scoring. The piece was written for the remembrance of the Sewol Ferry accident in Korea. 295 people were killed due to this horrible accident and it was a big shock to everyone in Korea and also to the whole world. I heard this news while having my dinner at Hells Kitchen after a long day at Juilliard. Even though I did not know the individuals who died and were moaning on the TV, I felt such a strong connection, much stronger than any other disaster news of other country, mostly because they were speaking in my first language, Korean. I had wanted to write a piece for the victims for a long time, but I could not find a suitable ensemble for it. In the piece, a traditional Korean children’s tune is quoted. The theme gets juxtaposed in many different ways; a cantas firmus, a melodic line, and harmonic line. Towards the end of my process of my work, I also experienced a great loss in my family. My grandfather passed away and that actually was the first death in my family after I grew up enough to remember. I can admit that before that incident, I never truly understood what death meant. The piece started with the idea of my country’s great loss, but then it ended with a huge loss from my family. This piece has brought me a lot of emotional struggle as I was writing and it certainly was a very challenging piece for me. I spent much of my childhood on a lake* where I had the privilege of interacting with an abundance of plants and animals– most notably, the common loon. \u003cem\u003eEchoes of a Northern Lake\u003c\/em\u003e is my musical interpretation of the loons’ song and the beautiful yet rapidly declining ecosystems they rely on. Each section of the piece is a vignette of my cherished memories and an invitation for musicians and audiences to reflect on their own relationships with nature. We all have a role to play in the health and longevity of the planet we call home, and we are much more likely to protect that which we know and love. This piece was inspired by an exciting and rewarding journey through Yosemite National Park to reach the Glacier Point overlook before sundown. Driving up the steep mountain roads felt like a race against time, with the sunset already in progress. Along the way, we experienced jaw-dropping vistas over the edge of rocky cliffs; the colours in the sky shifted from vibrant blue and orange to hazy pink and purple. We drove through extensive areas of forest damaged by recent wildfires– a visceral reminder of the impacts of our changing climate and the need for balance in nature. When we arrived at the lookout, we were rewarded with a magnificent and exhilarating view of Half Dome and Yosemite Valley set against a glowing sky (as shown on the cover of this score!) Reflecting on this concept prompted a deeper, metaphorical realization: even in times of darkness, we are able to observe, generate, and experience light, and that coming together to make music is one of the ways in which we can do this. When I was a high school student, I participated in the Ontario Provincial Honour Band and performed at the annual OMEA conference. It was a formative experience during which I was surrounded by others who were there out of a genuine desire to share their love of music -- a beautiful example of “intrinsic” motivation. It has been ten years since I graduated from my high school music program, and five years since completing my post-secondary studies in music, and I am endlessly grateful to have been part of the music education community in Ontario.
