To me, this is what it means to play in an ensemble of any sort, or to play a team sport, or to be in a club, in a drama\/film production, on a tech crew, or on a debate team, etc. These are all examples of activities that are available in high school (and moving forward, in life), and I think an important reminder for us all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTherefore, Together begins with each section taking their turn playing a phrase in unison – together – where even though they are all playing the same notes, it takes a team effort to make it sound as one. Each section gets a phrase, and then they have to hand it off to the next. After this opening section, a rhythmical, upbeat, and tuneful section emerges, where each section — each player — is held responsible, for upholding their integral roles. Whether it be a melody, important rhythmical pulsing, or a bass line, the success of the team cannot happen without the practiced and executed contribution of each player.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe opening phrases eventually return (at letter H), but now they are all played simultaneously, proving once again that when all sections perform their parts together, the entire team (or company) can succeed. The highlight of the piece was a demonstration of how composers put melody, harmony, and rhythm together, culminating with volunteers from the audience composing and premiering a new piece of music on the spot. Compose Yourself! – in its original form – has been a successful educational demonstration for orchestras across the globe, with now over 350 performances having taken place in the last 20 years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLooking for further ways to engage the audience, Stephenson wrote a new and fanciful story to go along with the music already composed. It is also a celebration of intersecting identities that make up who I am and many others that are just like me. People with multiple intersecting identities have a higher risk of developing mental illnesses and also have a higher chance of experiencing violence due to biases, systemic barriers, stigmas, and lack of access to adequate resources.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA unique issue that I have experienced because of my intersections is tokenism. There was a commission that I was asked to do a few years ago regarding the murder of a black man just months prior. While initially honored to be asked to create an original work surrounding such a major event, I declined to do it because I did not want to relive the trauma of seeing someone like me being murdered by the same people we're supposed to call in case of emergency. When asked why I declined, I explained why it is unethical to even think of asking one of your only black student composers to relive such a traumatic event, regardless of intent. I know that person has a good heart and good intentions in mind so I did not take offense to their questions at all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother thing I would like to share is that I did not learn what the term microaggression meant until I got to college. For those unfamiliar, a microaggression is defined as a subtle act of discrimination toward a minority. It is subtle enough to make you question yourself, yet audacious enough to make you think twice about what was just said or done to you. At the time, my school had also been among the top most unfriendly universities to their LGBTQ+ students. I'm sure you can start to picture how students like me felt every day. This is just one example of how our intersections play such a major part in our lives. Despite all adversities that I felt and experienced, I shared my coming out story and overall perspective with news stations around the city. Of course, I heard and read the nasty comments that people make, but I also cherished the words of my loved ones in my community. We cannot and will NOT be intimidated into erasure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVisibility and representation are incredibly important to me because we need to SEE that people that look and act just like us can be successful. Melodically, the work draws from various modes akin to early African American holler songs and chant traditions still practiced in Africa and across some of its diaspora in the Americas. The originally intended instrumentation was for a wind quintet with percussion, but as the work evolved it became readily expanded to a small band ensemble of mixed instruments. “Mandjani Dance” really takes it name from a dance tradition in West Africa region of Guinea, Mali, Senegal and Gambia. However, variations of the dance, though with different names, are common across the continent, especially in the eastern sub region of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, and the south-central areas of Zambia and Zimbabwe. The work opens with a chant, that is quickly followed by an energetic dance celebration. The repeated sections are important, as they help accentuate a communal dance of aspiration. I chose the topic from three the students expressed an interest in exploring musically. All of them appealed to me (the other two were spirituality and cultural pride); perhaps the war raging in the Middle East, yet another highly publicized mass shooting, and other looming existential problems made a poem about finding tranquility come to me most\u003cbr\u003eeasily.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnce I had the image of a soul folding its weary wings, I looked for others that would complement it. The current situation feels like a tempest. I chose the phrase “climb above the storm” because it’s impossible to achieve inner peace without finding quiet, either internal or external. Climbing is work; the other ways to get above something didn’t seem to convey enough struggle. The middle of the poem consists of reminders and instructions. To become centered, we have to make a conscious decision to shut out distractions. I chose “calm decision” rather than “conscious decision” because the former implies more detachment from the elements swirling around us, sort of like being in the eye of the storm. Deep, rhythmic breathing is an age-old pathway to serenity. After we have stilled our minds, we can go forth, energized, and ride above the fray.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo me, nothing is more inspiring than watching a bird riding the wind currents, not flapping its wings, but just soaring. The band is part of the New Horizons International Music Association, a network of community music ensembles for adults.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhen Chris approached me about this project, we had a wonderful conversation about how to create a meaningful collaboration with his community band members. We agreed that it would make for a memorable experience if the musicians had the opportunity to interact with me throughout the creative process – not just once the piece was finished. I met with the band, heard them play, answered their questions about being a composer, and invited them to tell me what their band experiences meant to them so that I could create a special piece inspired by their stories. They sent me photos of their favourite local vistas so I could see what the horizon looked like from their perspective. I was able to incorporate these wonderful sources of inspirations, as well as a variation of the melody from “Oh What A Beautiful Morning” (from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Oklahoma!)
