Both this piece and “Breath” reflect on the significance of breathing in 2020 and 2021, from loss of breath due to COVID-19 to protecting one’s breath via the Black Lives Matter movement to learning to breathe mindfully in order to endure catastrophic events. In an interview with PEM, Hussain described the five-second breath as “the perfect breath.” Breathing in for five seconds and out for five seconds reinvigorates us, gives us the oxygen we need, and helps connect our mind and body. The artist remarked, “I see things mathematically, and so for me, these paintings were a visual interpretation of what it would look like to breathe in and breathe out.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eBreathing Light\u003c\/em\u003e evokes this same translation, but to music. The piece opens by grounding the ensemble in the five-second breath, a series of five chords at 60 bpm (the tempo of seconds). Throughout the work, the ensemble navigates moments when their perfect breath is thrown off-course; they start “breathing light” (shallow breathing). There is something really poignant about a grand and beautiful animal bursting into flame and becoming a grey and papery ash, a feeling that humans experience as we move through different stages of life, both ones that build us up to our highest potential and those that feel like the end. This piece sits at the intersection of those two concepts by exploring the inherited mythology of Candlewood Lake, one of multiple supposedly haunted lakes in my hometown. Candlewood Lake is manmade, Connecticut Light and Power having seized the town of Jerusalem through eminent domain to be filled with water, turning a large valley into a lake for hydroelectric power to support five surrounding towns. The idea of this underwater town fascinated and terrified me as a child, and the lore of the lake was whispered from child to child as I grew up. Some say if you dive down far enough, you can touch an old church steeple. I was struck by how relatable and timely such an early and scientific tome is to us today in its pondering of humans’ influence on the earth and each other. Huygens implores the reader—and now listener—to reflect on why we harm one another for short-sighted and selfish reasons when our planet is such a tiny part of the entire vast and wondrous universe. Throughout the piece, the tenor conveys Huygens’ contemplation while the ensemble evokes Huygens’ invention of the pendulum clock and study of elastic collision through steady and misaligned rhythmic motives. Grandma and Nanny are true role models, and this made me wonder what parts of myself come from them. Do we inherently perceive something that is mathematically constructed as stilted or artificial? Can patterns blossom organically and calculations arrive effortlessly? This work employs the first nine Fibonacci numbers intervallically, harmonically, rhythmically, and metrically, showcasing the rich tone and registral possibilities of the tuba as the performers journey through a systematically shifting world.
