The work draws programmatic inspiration from Robert Jordan’s epic fantasy series The Wheel of Time, in the second book of which a great battle takes place between “good” and “evil”, with the legendary Horn of Valere (itself drawn from Norse mythology) playing a central role.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDawn evokes a new day being born in deceptive calm, where time seems suspended yet heavy with portent. As War Is Engaged depicts the first stages of battle, while Quiet Descending takes us away from the heat of war to a scene where the legendary horn is sounded, summoning the dead heroes of legend, who emerge from the mist in time to turn the tide of battle. In this dystopia, a young boy’s painfully naive question – “what did I do wrong” – is met with a scathing diatribe on humanity’s complicity in its own planet’s destruction, resulting from a myopic preoccupation with ephemeral comforts and exploitative indulgence. In the case of brittle fracture, there is little or no apparent plastic deformation before failure occurs; in other words, cracks travel so fast that it is often impossible to tell when the material will break.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eBrittle Fracture\u003c\/em\u003e attempts to depict this type of structural failure in musical terms. Inspired by modulation and temporal manipulation techniques commonly employed in pop music production, the piece is based on a simple four-note piano theme that is performed as if it were being processed through an echo unit. The piano’s resulting spectral content is selectively captured, extended, and transformed by the orchestral instruments, effectuating a long-range rhythmic, melodic, registral, articulative, and dynamic intensification. Throughout this textural crescendo, the music undergoes various types and degrees of stress that attempt to disrupt the constant musical flow. At the peak of the process the music finally buckles under its own weight, causing an abrupt rupture in the structure. Inviting the reader to join him in calm commiseration, he counsels us to first take stock in our surroundings – in the quiet beauty of our natural and built environment – before joining him in attempting to find the words to express the horror that such an act of violence elicits.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSun Exhaling Light takes this premise as its starting point. Solar wind is a stream of charged particles emitted by the Sun. It buffets our planet constantly, Earth’s magnetosphere our only protection against the intense radiation that would inflict severe damage on all life. One can imagine these competing forces as a metaphor for the conflict between the drive to aggression and the protective shield that is human civilization. Lawrence’s The Ship of Death. It had immediately drawn me in, sung to me, in a way that I knew I had to set it to music one day. When the new project with Phil came up, I was drawn back to that text, which seemed finally complete with his voice uttering it in my head.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt has taken some time for the circumstances to align just right, but finally we’re pleased to present the results of our collaboration: Into Oblivion, a symphonic song cycle for bass-baritone and orchestra.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThough D.H. Lawrence’s literary oeuvre had largely been dominated by a preoccupation with human relationships, his failing health in the last years of his too-short life prompted him towards some darker topics. The Ship of Death, composed in autumn 1929 while Lawrence was dying from tuberculosis, is a particularly solitary and darkly introspective work in which the poet grapples with his own mortality. Faced with the inexorable approach of death – the obsessively repeated ‘oblivion’ – Lawrence considers how one might best prepare for it, to go into that oblivion with grace and a sense of relief, along the way drawing on ancient conceptions of death from both western and eastern traditions.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eInto Oblivion follows the dramatic trajectory of Lawrence’s poem. Each of the ten numbered sections of the poem forms its own movement, and the ten movements are then grouped into three large ‘parts’. It suggested something of Chopin’s and Scriabin’s intimate nocturnal ruminations, with a dash of Debussy-esque coloration. This was quite alien to my usual style, which tends towards propulsive, mechanical chugging and dense chord voicings. That it was a stylistic deviation, and that it evoked flavors of long-dead composers, was not in itself an issue; by that point, I’d long shed any academia-instilled hang-ups about the viability of certain musical languages. But in 2020, the world of concert music was at a standstill, almost all professional projects on indefinite hold, and outlooks troublingly uncertain. There was no practical outlet for the piece that these original ideas were suggesting to me, so it was relegated to the “maybe someday” shelf. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFour years later, the project found a home. The pairing of piano with oboe unlocked the piece for me, and \u003cem\u003eThe Tender Scars of Memory\u003c\/em\u003e emerged. Presented here in the brightness of spring, performed with elegance and luminosity by Caitlin and Adam, I sense an optimism in the work that lightens its dark origins. Guitar pioneers such as Yngwie Malmsteen, Ritchie Blackmore, Michael Romeo, and Uli Jon Roth grew up on a classical music diet before becoming shred guitar icons. In Vivaldi's more virtuosic string music, such as the fast movements of the Winter and Summer concerti from the Four Seasons, the music's propulsive, motoric, hard-edged style bears a strong resemblance to some subgenres of contemporary metal.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cem\u003eTo wake and find the world still burning\u003c\/em\u003e takes the stark, energetic, moto perpetuo atmosphere of these most metal of baroque masterworks as its starting point, and refilters it through a contemporary metal sensibility, enhancing the hardness and aggression in any way possible.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis piece was composed a year into the pandemic. The rarity of this opportunity for a young composer in the 21st century can not be overstated. This position has afforded me an incredible venue in which to hone my craft over an extended period of time, in the process building a formidable repertoire of large-scale musical works. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt seemed most fitting that my last major piece for the WSO would be a symphony, a genre that represents one of humanity’s great artistic achievements. In this one, there are no soloists, twists, or special effects: just pure orchestral music performed by a village’s worth of dedicated musicians. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMy\u003cem\u003e Symphony No. 3: Beyond Horizon\u003c\/em\u003e pulls together themes and ideas that have been swirling around in my head – and in my sketchbooks – for many years. For me, it represents an entire musical era. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThematically, it is inspired by Robert Jordan’s literary series from which I appropriated the above epigraph. For those who know it well, you may hear some allusions and some of the spirit of that great story within the dramatic narrative of the music.
