During our second week of the program, all six immersion fellows stayed in a spacious bed and breakfast in the Catskills mountains called The Jeffersonian. Being one of two composers, and the only non-performing composer, I found that most of my days were spent listening to the other fellows practice. I wrote this piece in search of a quieter, peaceful, one-ness of sound, and the work is named after a small hole in the floor of the kitchen of The Jeffersonian. The piece took shape over the next several months. I had initially asked for a piece for solo cello, but it was Harriet’s idea, quite early in the process, to add a second cello part. After his passing I reworked many pas-sages as my grief got the better of me. It doesn’t really reflect the music I associate with him, but it does, in many ways, reflect my mindset as I wrote it. Pangs of pure grief give way to a cynical waltz which in turn finds acceptance in a meditative final section. David left us suddenly, and no one, so far as I know, was able to say goodbye. I was shattered by the potent simplicity of the piece (the air raid siren bit was just one movement, but it was the whole movement). I wanted to make something that felt as natural. This piece is almost certainly not that, but it was written in direct response to Adams’ piece. \u003cem\u003ei want to be a pindrop\u003c\/em\u003e is composed of simple attacks separated by numbers of beats dictated by a sequence of the first 12 prime numbers. The rhythms, structure, and some other parameters of all three movements were composed algorithmically and I found the result more than satisfying material to compose further. We think of a world when that was possible before humans used them as targets. Musically, I wanted to use the same approach as Lorene. Rather than write a sad, dark elegy about the bird’s death, I chose to use mostly major modes and clusters of harmonies that could be both a reflection on the mysterious starling’s life before the rats, and also the cause of its erasure from the earth thereafter.
