I grew up in Korea and came to the United States as a teenager, so the stories that influenced me most in childhood were Korean folktales. These are stories that everyone in Korea knows, but are unfamiliar to many outside of it. Through music, I want to share those stories and invite listeners into that world.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eA Tale of the Bunny and the Turtle \u003c\/em\u003eis based on the Korean folktale 별주부전. In the story, the Dragon King of the sea falls gravely ill, and the only cure is said to be the liver of a rabbit. A loyal turtle is sent to the land above to bring a rabbit back to the underwater palace. With flattery and promises of wonder, the turtle persuades the rabbit to travel with him to the sea, where the truth of the situation is revealed. Faced with death, the rabbit survives through quick wit, claiming that his liver has been left behind on land. When the turtle carries him back to retrieve it, the rabbit escapes, leaving the others to face the consequences.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eRevisiting this story as an adult has been surprising. As a child, I understood it in very black and white terms, with a clever hero and a triumphant ending. Now, I find myself thinking more deeply about what follows that victory. The shame and guilt the turtle must feel after failing his mission, and the fate of the Dragon King, who is not only a ruler but also a son, a father, and the center of an entire kingdom. These layers of consequence make the story feel less like a simple moral lesson and more like a reflection of real life, where one person’s survival often comes at the expense of another.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe music follows the narrative of the story very closely, unfolding like a tone poem across twelve sections. Each section traces a moment in the tale, from illness and persuasion to deception and escape. One could trudge through what feels like hours of a boring lecture, fending off sleep, to have only spent ten minutes. The opposite is true as well. For instance, a whole day with someone you love can pass by like a blur and you may forget what time does to you—sleep, hunger, and life is entirely disregarded.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_7 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"color_11 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eCan You Stop the Time?\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e \u003c\/em\u003eis about this second meaning of time and is a question we’ve all thought about in some form, at some point in our lives. Concurrently, this piece explores textures that resemble time slipping away too quickly, incorporating elements of tremolo, trills, ascending and descending runs, and sudden changes in dynamics.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_7 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"color_11 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eThe moment that we ask “Can you stop the time?” is a moment too precious to forfeit. But time cannot be stopped, so we accept the answer that gives us another option, the future—one with hope and promise of good fortune. When she enters the stage, it feels as if the whole world stops, and only Bokyung and her guitar exist. It is always an absolute joy\u003cbr\u003eand honor to have my music performed by her, and this guitar concerto would not be possible without her.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eMy focus on this work was singular: to make her shine as a soloist as much as I could. Bokyung has a sparkling, magical tone, and while her technique is flawless, her lyrical playing has the power to move any listener. Based on our past collaborations, I aimed to create something beautiful that also showcases her impressive caliber as one of today's leading guitarists.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eThe three movements of the concerto each explore different moods, tempi, and atmospheres, all designed to highlight her extraordinary talent. They share recognizable original melodic components that recycle throughout the piece, transforming into different textures and motifs. This process resembles our lives and friendships throughout the years, constantly evolving yet always retaining a core essence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eI would also like to thank the Albany Symphony and Maestro David Alan Miller for trusting both me and Bokyung to pursue our dream project. Inspired by these women’s hardships, unique odysseys, and remarkable perseverance, “Home” invokes the lifecycle of the Phoenix, a mythological creature that is swallowed by its own flames and is reborn from its ashes. Much like the immortal and fearless Phoenix, these three women rose from the ashes of their past, reborn with a new hope for the future.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eWhen I began this work, I was determined to stay true to myself musically while continuing to challenge my compositional boundaries. I wanted my embrace of a new compositional approach to reflect and honor the vulnerability of a new life journey. This was my way of paying respect to the experiences of these extraordinary women. The resulting piece expresses pain in a raw and truthful light while serving as a larger commentary on the the cruel and unrelenting nature of the world. Most importantly, it intends to pay homage to individuals who choose to shoulder great burden in order to find a brighter path.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eWhen sharing their accounts, all three women acknowledged what’s done is done. Pain can transform into something new, and through the scorching flames and the resulting ashes, a new life can be found.  With the notion of rebirth in mind, the piece culminates in a turbulent rhythmic unity, the energy of which quickly melts into a prolonged and quiet sustain. Reflecting upon the momentous career of the exceptional romantic pianist and composer Clara Schumann, it was inevitable to be moved by her role as a female musician in the 19th century. As a contemporary female composer from Korea, studying Schumann’s life was an essential and significant path for me—it led me to a perspective in which I closely reevaluated my work and what it meant to be outside the status quo. I felt it was necessary to honor and dedicate this piece to her work, as well as interpret her artistic ideas into mine. To do this, I incorporated and quoted the form and melodic ideas from Schumann’s lyrical and ornate “Liebst du um Schönheit”. In contrast to my usual rhythm driven work, this composition for piano and strings is focused heavily on melody and harmony, and is embellished with florid texture and drama. To deny that is not innocent curiosity, but an act rooted in prejudice—an erasure of dignity and identity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eThe second movement, The Devil Is a Good Liar, confronts the hypocrisy of someone who claimed to be a devout Christian, yet whose actions—lying, isolating, manipulating, and perpetuating harm—stood in direct opposition to the faith he professed. For me, this contradiction made him not godly at all, but closer to the devil himself. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eThe final movement, Something Is Wrong, rises from the necessity of speaking out, even when it is uncomfortable or unresolved. It is an act of defiance to say aloud that silence is not acceptable. The structure of the piece was strictly driven from a song called Space Cowboy by a well-known British group Jamiroquai. The memory of me holding a brown bag, filled with roasted chestnuts, and waiting for my dad to open them for me is very dear to me, and even after 20 or so years, when I think of these memories, I can smell the roasted chestnuts on a cold, snowy day. The original melody is cheerful and energetic, but I wanted to make the melody to reflect my nostalgia.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_7 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eRamen and nine-holed-cole is a silly song from an animated tv-show Dooly the Little Dinosaur. Dooly and his friends enter a singing competition and sing this famous song where they talk about how the ramen cooked on a nine-holed-cole is the best. It is such a well-known tune, and my attempt in this movement was to hide the melody as much as I could! I wanted to make this movement as distant as it can be to the original source. The melody is stretched out immensely, and almost neglected. I used the original melody as a skeleton of the work, and wrote a moving, fluid line.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_7 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eMom and mackerel is a famous pop song from the 80s. It is a storytelling song where the singer finds a salted mackerel in the refrigerator at night while getting some water during sleep. That is his favorite food, and by seeing this prepared, he can feel his mom’s love. Love can be expressed in many ways. Parents from my generation or older tend not to be the most vocal or expressive. One of my mom’s love languages to her children definitely has been food. She may not tell me all things she feels about me or my siblings, but if we come back home, she asks us what we want to eat for weeks in ad- vance! Even though the original song is upbeat, and energetic, this song shares a very intimate sentiment. The piece is mono-thematic with several variations and alternations in harmony, texture, and dynamic. Justin worked on his song during his time in Korea with me and working with him on his music was such a fond memory from the time. I began working on the piece a few weeks before he had to begin his military service in Korea. He and I used to speak nearly everyday, but this was not possible once he joined the army. Writing this work was a good compensation and made me feel that I was somehow in a conversation with him. The three movements, “Love Poem After the Monsoons”, “Poem Written and Read Before Morning”, and “Love Sleep”, are primarily based on three poems of the same title, written by my brother, Justin Son.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eLove can be a sad business that is never resolving nor peaceful. Likewise, these poems hold an endearing, loving voice, that nonetheless sounds like it has failed to reach its lover at the other end. By acknowledging the passing of a season, attempting to defy a coming sunrise, or encouraging a disheartened lover to rest, the poem begins to resemble intimate, unfinished love letters or incomplete romantic gestures to someone specific. Interestingly, however, it feels hesitant, bashful, and even lonely.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eSome of my recent pieces, such as “The Last Smile of Love” and “Moonlight and Scooter” are also works that deal with the idea of love, which, though rapturous and intense, have an unshakable sense of longing. As I have worked with Tomas several times, I was aware of his technical strengths, and this work was created to showcase such abilities. Inspired by the four stages found in online delivery of Papa John’s pizza, the movements are named after each one: “Making”, “Baking”, “Boxing”, and “On Its Way”. First, “Making” imagines the process in which the pizza made. With kinetic scale runs that represent the sprinkling of shredded cheese, motifs that imitate the stretching of the dough, and quick range shifts that embody the tossing and throwing on toppings, each element found in this movement embodies the composition of the pizza itself. Next, “Baking” animates and personifies the pizza—the oven as a bedroom, a chamber of comfort, rest, warmth, and darkness. As the oven door closes, a lullaby begins. Tis second movement is lyrical and paced. Third is “Boxing”; this movement again continues the personification of the pizza, and imagines the pizza box as a casket. To symbolize this in a recognizable mode, Chopin’s “Funeral March” is taken and reharmonized—the rhythmic and melodic lines, as well as the phrasing found in Chopin’s piece is kept the same. Lastly, “On Its Way” represents the delivery car. This movement is heavily energetic and pattern oriented, depicting the countless yet routine stops the driver must make to deliver. These cards provided me with the power to move forward and helped me to cope with my situation. I pulled six cards to reflect on my past, present, and future, which became the foundation and inspiration for my piece.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eThese six cards seemed to depict a journey from darkness to light, instability to stability, and painful changes leading to a stronger community. However, in this community, everyone shared one common theme—shining in a place of darkness, a hope for the future. One client described the home as a “fresh breath of hope”, breathing color into what was once a bleak outlook. Each commission brings interesting, sometimes challenging objectives, and for me, parameters are the most fascinating inspirations for my creative process. They help narrow down my ideas, making the process extremely productive and effective.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eFor this project, Balourdet Quartet asked me to incorporate some aspect of AI. While AI can be seen as a threat to artists in all genres, I decided to explore various music-generating AI programs to see what they offered. Though intriguing, I wanted to create a work where I could maintain full ownership of the musical material. So, I turned to ChatGPT, arguably the most widely used AI program, to brainstorm and structure the piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eEarlier this year, my partner gifted me a \"galaxy\" named after me for my birthday. It was an unusual but incredibly sweet gift because he thought I deserved a whole galaxy. The galaxy he gave me is NGC 4258, discovered in 1781. It is an intermediate spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici, rich with fascinating characteristics. ChatGPT helped conceptualize seven distinct sections, each with names and musical descriptions, which I endeavored to honor with my imagination. I used the galaxy number 4258 as the main thematic idea, focusing on the intervallic relationships of those four numbers. I feel that a string quartet is the most intimate and personal genre for composers—one can truly get a sense of who the composer is through exploring their string quartet repertoire. I believe a string quartet may be the best gift a composer can offer to another (unfortunately, perhaps!). Inspired by these women’s hardships, unique odysseys, and remarkable perseverance, “Home” invokes the lifecycle of the Phoenix, a mythological creature that is swallowed by its own flames and is reborn from its ashes. Much like the immortal and fearless Phoenix, these three women rose from the ashes of their past, reborn with a new hope for the future.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eWhen I began this work, I was determined to stay true to myself musically while continuing to challenge my compositional boundaries. I wanted my embrace of a new compositional approach to reflect and honor the vulnerability of a new life journey. This was my way of paying respect to the experiences of these extraordinary women. The resulting piece expresses pain in a raw and truthful light while serving as a larger commentary on the the cruel and unrelenting nature of the world. Most importantly, it intends to pay homage to individuals who choose to shoulder great burden in order to find a brighter path.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eWhen sharing their accounts, all three women acknowledged what’s done is done. They believed that the the individual is in control of the ways in which life unfolds. Pain can transform into something new, and through the scorching flames and the resulting ashes, a new life can be found.  With the notion of rebirth in mind, the piece culminates in a turbulent rhythmic unity, the energy of which quickly melts into a prolonged and quiet sustain. This I felt symbolized a sign of togetherness and acceptance while also ushering in a new beginning.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eWriting “Home” opened my eyes to the importance of community. I learned that coming together and working toward a collective goal is necessary in order to overcome odds. As I reflect upon the community that has supported me through the writing process, I want to express my deepest gratitude to the Kinetic Ensemble, my family and friends, and especially to Mary Grace Johnson. Every musician’s life has been altered—all social engagements including rehearsals and performances have moved virtually, and the pandemic has forced all of us to become home-bodies. The requirement for the commission was to write a 1 minute work based on the music of JS Bach, scored for solo cello. The song cycle was inspired heavily by tunes in the cabaret style, and Molly was extremely generous to find an opportunity to collaborate on a set of ragtime pieces for solo piano. This process was one of the most enjoyable, allowing me to find personality unique to mine in an unfamiliar genre.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_7 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"color_11 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eThe piece includes three movements—fast, slow, and fast. Each conveys different moods and takes liberties with what is conventionally thought of as “ragtime”, but keeps the playful attitude that is hallmark to its sound. The piece should be played without restriction; the performer should feel free to improvise, adding extra rubatos, ritardandos, and dynamics at his or her will. The right hand’s opening motive turns out to be the main theme of the piece; this versatile motive, with slight variations, is the backbone of each major section in a loose, small-scale sonata form. At the beginning of Humidity Rag, the main motive is situated in a murky whole-tone sound world that gives the sense of stickiness indicated by the composer. The harmonic fog begins to lift as this section continues; the theme is then presented extrovertedly atop a soulful, repeating I-IV pedal, reminiscent of the harmonic rocking-back-and-forth of twelve-bar blues.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_7 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"color_11 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eA short developmental section ensues, incorporating grand, virtuosic gestures that perhaps recall the ecstatic writing of Scriabin. We then re-enter the murky, sticky sound world that opened the piece, this time punctuated with short riffs and cadenzas. After landing on a dominant pedal, the music builds intensely into an impassioned statement of the main motive, marked “Nowhere to escape.” After this emotional climax, the music winds down, aided by the markings “Even stickier than before” and “Sorry ... even stickier!” The main theme is again the backbone for the closing material, a nostalgic, endearing dénouement to this quirky piece. We had discussed the widening division between people around the world, whether it be racial divide as shown throughout America, or the physical and political divide of nations and peoples made from the recession of international trade, talk, and travel. I wanted to focus on the importance of looking back to appreciate our origins and what we have today, while also recognizing that looking back signifies the end of an era. Additionally, it encourages us to look toward the future with the utmost hope and dreams. In my own life, I have recently experienced significant changes, finding stability, support, and love more than ever before. Reflecting on the challenges and paths I have traversed has been enlightening. When we look back, we often romanticize what we once had, even if those times were difficult, leaving us with a bittersweet feeling. Over the past several years in Houston, I've had the privilege of hearing these three wonderful musicians frequently, and I've come to know them both personally and musically. It's always a treat to compose for people I understand so well musically, and I was beyond excited when we landed on the idea of crafting a composition inspired by the Houston Rodeo.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLiving in Houston for several years now, one of my favorite local events has undoubtedly been the Rodeo. It's Houston's pride and joy, an absolute whirlwind of fun—I've even taken to calling it the Gesamtkunstwerk of fun, and it truly lives up to the title. The Houston Rodeo offers everything one could imagine and more. From an endless array of fried foods, sweet treats, and barbecue to Agventure, where one can witness the miracle of birth with live hatching chicks and newborn animals, including opportunities to pet bunnies, it's a sensory overload. Then there's the excitement of the livestock show—cowboys riding bulls, cowgirls barrel racing, and the heartwarming chaos of events like the calf scramble and Mutton Bustin', where little kids bravely attempt to ride sheep, often with comical results. And let's not forget the colossal Carnival with its rides and attractions. Truly, the Houston Rodeo is an absolute blast.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to compose a piece that captured the spirit of these events and activities. The work is divided into seven sections, each titled—I. Rodeo, II. Agventure, III. Saddle Bronc, IV. Barrel Racing, V. Calf Scramble, VI. Mutton Bustin', and VII. Y'all Come Back and See Us!\u003cbr\u003eExperiencing this Gesamtkunstwerk firsthand is a must.
