The primary thematic material is attributed to music from the Civil Rights era, which was the vehicle that helped shepherd many protests toward the cause of equal rights for Black Americans. The first movement is a fantasia on \u003cem\u003eKeep Your Eyes on the Prize\u003c\/em\u003e, which is derived from the gospel hymn Keep Your Hand on the Plow. The mixed meters and extended phrases give the listener the sense of being on a ride in which they must grab on to something to stay in place. The second movement, \u003cem\u003eTake My Hand Precious Lord,\u003c\/em\u003e is a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. His favorite hymn, it was sung at King's funeral by gospel singer Mahlia Jackson. The last movement, \u003cem\u003eEgo Trippin,'\u003c\/em\u003e speaks to the power of believing in one's self. The work centers on D (the key area of Beethoven’s second symphony), and attempts to travel to Eb (the key area of his third). This small half-step is rendered infinitely large as the gravity of D keeps pulling the orchestra back into its orbit. Partly autobiographical, Climb explores aural metaphors for the physical sensations that are part of my daily life with dysautonomia. The piece opens with a frantic burst of adrenaline that soon gives way to the sensation of stomach-dropping nausea and tinnitus. A weak heartbeat emerges, racing, unsteady. Punctuated by brassy flashes of pain, the orchestra-body steels itself with determination, even optimism, before a violent attack of palpitations shatters its progress, melting into melodrama and mourning for a wellness and a wholeness that will never come again. Tourists mostly pass over the unassuming island in favor of other, larger islands’ offerings, leaving Guemes’ beautiful craggy cliffs and timbered hills mostly to its peaceful residents. there’s a part of me that grew up on this island, spending slow, quiet childhood summers with my grandparents. My grandparents’ old home has now been sold, and a new child has taken my place in the yellow house with its eagle tree on the cliff. There they would charge the locals for airplane rides, and perform thrilling airshows called “flying circuses”. Much like traveling circuses, these barnstormers stayed in one given place for only a short while, and their arrivals were tremendously exciting for the culturally and technologically reclusive farmer audiences. These airshows were tremendously gripping, but were also excessively dangerous. Some of the stunts they performed were: barrel rolls, flips, dives, wing walking (walking on the wings of a moving plane), midair plane transfers, and even playing tennis on the wings of a moving plane. Quite often these barnstormers were injured or killed performing these stunts. Ernest Shackleton’s “Nimrod Expedition” of 1907-09 reached a latitude of 88° 23' S. This was, by far, the farthest south reached at that time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat is largely unknown about this expedition, however, is the unusual encounter made by Shackleton and his company. While traversing atop Beardmore Glacier, a monumental discovery by the Nimrod Expedition (which sits at approximately 83° S, farthest south at that time), they came into view of an awesome sight; an expansive and glorious field of \u003cem\u003ecurious glass structures,\u003c\/em\u003e between four and fifteen feet in height. They were immaculate, crystalline, impeccably smooth, and laid out with meticulous and symmetrical coordination, reminiscent of the quiet solemnity of a cemetery. When the sunlight rose above the surrounding mountain ranges and hit these fantastic monuments, a brilliant diffusive gleam of light filled the glacial valley, and illuminated everything it touched with the brightest white light imaginable. Even more curious is that the arduous Antarctic weather seemed to have no erosive effect on the cleanliness of these structures, and that analysis shows that they have been sitting like this, unblemished, for the past 4,000 years. It is still unknown who built or arranged them. James Baldwin sought to bear witness to the country that birthed him and hated him, a country that murdered his friends (Evers, King, X) for speaking out against injustice. Despite the pain of those wounds, it is evident that, although Baldwin didn't hesitate to hold our deeply flawed society to account, his words were rooted in an impossible love of this country. Though they were written decades ago, his words still ring true. Today, Baldwin asks us to look in the mirror and reckon with what we see. He asks us to examine the nature of power and its dependence on human will and desire. He asks us to go to \"the unprotected\" among us in order to examine our supposed love for justice. I like to think that if he were to reword his proposal today, he would include the immigrant, the refugee, the trans person, those without bodily autonomy under the law, and those suffering in the thrall of poverty. Baldwin acknowledges all the messiness and failure and genocide and death that has brought us to this point and he asks us to build a new world where we truly value and support each other in all of our differences. Shortly after the premiere of the piece, under my own baton in October of 2012, I realized that the world of film music was not where I belonged and I chose to pursue my doctorate in composition and a career in \"concert\" music. Conducting this piece with an orchestra made up of some of my best friends is still one of my most cherished musical memories. I hope future audiences will get the chance to visit Sleepy Hollow through my music and enjoy a little fright.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 0.875rem;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eNotes on the 2021 Revision:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI've always been a little upset that this piece never went on to have performances beyond the premiere. As I got older I realized that the piece, while pretty good, was a little too \"fat\" and needed trimming. The lockdown in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic afforded me the time to begin revising the piece and a performance by the New England Film Orchestra in October, 2022 gave me the kick I needed to finish the revision. The result is a piece that is five minutes shorter with tighter orchestration (the original version called for six percussionists, this one calls for four) and a refinement of some of the musical gestures. This piece is where many of the techniques that make up my mature \"voice\" first showed up. In some instances I chose to embrace them in their primordial form, in others I chose to update them to better reflect who I am as a composer today. Other sections of the original version amounted to little more than theft from the composers I was interested in at the time (notably a direct lift from The Rite of Spring in the fourth movement), these sections have been removed and in the places where new music was required I inserted an allusion to the composer rather than an outright quotation. Our family visited there most summers of my childhood, and when the weather held we spent long lazy mornings at the lake. After lunch, while others napped, I snuck outside and made up songs, sang with the crickets, waves and trees. Soon the woodwinds play cascading scales while the melody continues. The piano’s resulting spectral content is selectively captured, extended, and transformed by the orchestral instruments, effectuating a long-range rhythmic, melodic, registral, articulative, and dynamic intensification. Throughout this textural crescendo, the music undergoes various types and degrees of stress that attempt to disrupt the constant musical flow. At the peak of the process the music finally buckles under its own weight, causing an abrupt rupture in the structure. Phil remains one of the most inspiring musicians I’ve had the pleasure of working with, so there was no hesitation in my response. We quickly started developing the idea for a large-scale work.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSome years earlier, while researching possible texts to set for a different project, I’d come across D.H. Lawrence’s The Ship of Death. It had immediately drawn me in, sung to me, in a way that I knew I had to set it to music one day. When the new project with Phil came up, I was drawn back to that text, which seemed finally complete with his voice uttering it in my head.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt has taken some time for the circumstances to align just right, but finally we’re pleased to present the results of our collaboration: Into Oblivion, a symphonic song cycle for bass-baritone and orchestra.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThough D.H. Lawrence’s literary oeuvre had largely been dominated by a preoccupation with human relationships, his failing health in the last years of his too-short life prompted him towards some darker topics. The Ship of Death, composed in autumn 1929 while Lawrence was dying from tuberculosis, is a particularly solitary and darkly introspective work in which the poet grapples with his own mortality. Faced with the inexorable approach of death – the obsessively repeated ‘oblivion’ – Lawrence considers how one might best prepare for it, to go into that oblivion with grace and a sense of relief, along the way drawing on ancient conceptions of death from both western and eastern traditions.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eInto Oblivion follows the dramatic trajectory of Lawrence’s poem. Each of the ten numbered sections of the poem forms its own movement, and the ten movements are then grouped into three large ‘parts’. In graduate school, I studied with the late Steven Stucky, whose \u003cem\u003eSecond Concerto for Orchestra\u003c\/em\u003e also became an important piece to me. Both of these works celebrate the instrument that is the orchestra, and that is what I wanted to do when the opportunity arose to compose a second piece for the BSO, this time to help open its 2019-20 season. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI grew up playing trumpet in orchestras, and listening to orchestral music has always been an important part of my life. The experience of a live performance is powerful. It is a ritual that congregates people so that we can listen to each other. It is a remarkable thing. These were some of my thoughts when I began to write this piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI feel that my music, at its heart, is really about music itself. My thoughts and feelings help create a scaffolding for my musical characters, but it is the elements of music – pitches, harmonies, motives – that create the music’s life. In the days after I finished writing, I realized that this piece is like a prism, through which many stories can be told. This is all to say, I hope you can let the piece take you on its own journey, whatever it may be.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eConcerto for Orchestra\u003c\/em\u003e is cast as a single, continuous movement in three parts. At the onset, two contrasting musical worlds are placed into juxtaposition, and possibly, conflict – clamorous and frenzied music centered on the pitch, E-flat, and still, intimate and fragile music centered a half-step away, on the pitch of E. This introduction provides building blocks for the music that follows. The first section consists of a series of connected episodes where we more intimately meet the instrumental families of the winds, strings and brass, with the percussion playing a supportive and guiding role throughout. The artist Alberto Burri built a large-scale memorial for the destroyed city in place of and directly on top of its ruins. This land artwork, “Cretto di Burri” (1984-1989), is one of the world’s largest works of contemporary art, a massive cement structure covering nearly twenty-five acres. The artwork maps itself onto the city plan of Gibellina, replicating the city blocks with giant, five-feet high slabs of cement that fill the space where buildings once stood, and creating the city streets with deeply cut channels or “cracks” in these slabs of cement that people can walk through. Gibellina was situated on a hillside in the mountains of Sicily and so one of the marvels of Burri’s work is that he was able to pour blocks of cement that maintain a consistent height on this steep incline. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"paragraph_style_5\"\u003eI visited Gibellina in the spring of 2014 and my piece of music is inspired by my experience engaging with “Cretto di Burri” as a viewer, first from afar, then from within and finally from atop one of the concrete “city blocks” after climbing to its highest point on the hill.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"paragraph_style_5\"\u003eMy work begins with my reaction to seeing Burri’s structure from afar ­– this monumental concrete “city” situated in a windswept expanse, wind blowing through the channels in the concrete, and the whole artwork itself resting on the dramatic incline of a hillside in the Sicilian mountains.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"paragraph_style_5\"\u003eIn the middle of my work, the texture changes dramatically and I seek to recreate my memories and emotions of entering the artwork and walking through the sunken cement streets. As I walked through these channels of cement I imagined rising up around me a chorus of people’s voices who once lived there that now lay silenced under these concrete tombs. I tried to think of the sounds the city once used to make before it fell silent and to concrete. I slowly continued to walk up the hillside and climbed atop one of the concrete slabs at the top of the hillside to look out to the vista of mountains in the distance. On the other side of the valley I saw the large rectangles of farm fields filled with life and growth, which I thought of as a counterpart to the large rectangles of cement, memorializing death, that I was standing on. In the case of “Glimpse,” it was the latter – I decided on the title months before composing any of the music. Using a lens, such as a title, poem or artwork, helps stir my creativity and focus my musical ideas.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJust before I began composing “Glimpse,” I strolled in New York City’s Riverside Park and took in a “glimpse” of a scene at the park, opening my eyes for a few seconds and then closing them shut, trying to remember all that I saw and heard in that one moment. I remember a lively scene: seeing people bicycling and jogging, others standing talking on their cell phones or playing ball with their children in the grass, while the expanse of the Hudson River glistened in the sun in the background, and I heard the traffic of the busy city streets behind my shoulder. I thought of all the different people’s lives that converged for this single fleeting moment, one that I arbitrarily captured, but which had already started to form a vivid memory in my mind. I imagined where the lives of all these characters in this scene lead after the moment was over and they continue with their lives.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn my piece, I aim to capture a similar fleeting moment, and then gradually explore the elements of this “glimpse” in greater depth as each develops and grows over the course of the piece. For instance, at the beginning of “Glimpse,” I present all the themes of the work at once, superimposed on top of each other. At the onset, you will hear a fanfare motif in the brass, a passionately lyrical, rising melody in the strings, a frenetic triplet texture in the winds, and dramatic bursts in the bass drum and timpani. These are the characters of my piece, and each reappears throughout the work in different guises and contexts, transformed by time, occasionally meeting again.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy work does not seek to accurately depict the scene I experienced in Riverside Park. Instead, the themes are treated abstractly, as musical characters living in their own world. However, the feelings the moment in the park instilled in me have influenced my piece. Arthur Ganson’s sculpture, Machine with 23 Scraps of Paper, consists of a machine, which through the use of electricity and various levers and gears, animates twenty-three scraps of paper into flying paper birds. The flapping scraps of paper serve as puppets of the larger churning machine, and I could not help but imagine the sculpture as representative of a modern-day Pinocchio story, the paper breaking free of their puppet master, coming to life and flying away into the sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"paragraph_style_5\"\u003eHanging above my desk is a poster of Henri Matisse’s collage Icarus (from his Jazz portfolio, 1947). The intensely lyrical gestures of the painting, combined with allusions to the Greek myth of Icarus and Daedalus, merged in my mind with the gracefully fluttering images of the paper birds and soft clicking sounds of the machines from Ganson’s sculpture to serve as the basis of my own work, Icarus Dreamt.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"paragraph_style_5\"\u003eIn the Greek myth, Daedalus, father of Icarus, constructed wings made of feather and wax to escape imprisonment by King Minos of Crete. As they escaped, Daedalus warned Icarus not to fly too close to the sun, as the wax fastening the wings to his back would melt. Despite his father’s warning, Icarus flew too close to the sun, causing his wings to melt and for him to fall to the sea below.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"paragraph_style_5\"\u003eThe musical work follows the narrative trajectory of the Greek myth but imagines it as Icarus’ dream before taking his fateful flight. This has all been a starting point that unlocked my imagination in surprising ways, creating within and between spaces of stillness and activity and listening and singing. With the support of the Brown University Orchestra, Chorus and Brown Arts Institute, I invited Brown Assistant Professor of Literary Arts, Sawako Nakayasu, to write a new newly commissioned poem, \u003cem\u003eOpen again a turn of light\u003c\/em\u003e, that I set to music for orchestra and choir.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eWhen Sawako and I met to discuss ideas, I shared two phrases that had recently inspired me in my thinking for this occasion: “soul-sustaining light” and “refuge.” These are BAI Artistic Director Avery Willis Hoffman’s words from a presentation she gave to the faculty a few weeks earlier about the hall’s transformative potential as a physical space for inspiring artistic creation. My conversations with Sawako soon spanned a wide range of ideas and concepts, finding metaphors in natural phenomena such as wind and waves. Sawako returned a few weeks later with a poem that encapsulates a world of experiences. Grounded in the imagery of light, the text continually returns to the gesture of “opening,” each time helping us see this act through a new window of feeling.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eIn the music, I aim to capture the poetry’s interplay between dark and light, play and contemplation, momentary feelings and monumental shifts, and also of looking forward and looking back. On clear days, I would stand on the shore and look out across the bay imagining the open sea beyond and the faraway lands that awaited on its opposite shores.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eShortly before writing this piece, flutist Alejandro Escuer’s home was destroyed by sea surf whipped up by a hurricane. I was moved by both the painfulness of this experience but also his and his family’s determination to rebuild. As I began this flute concerto, I took walks by the sea, contemplating the vastness of the ocean, pondering its inherent dualities. The sea brings both destruction and new life as well as an uncertainty of the unknown paired with the rhythmic certainty of the tide that can be even more anticipated than one’s next breath. It separates societies from each other and connects them. It is a home and the path to new beginnings. It encapsulates such strength, gracefulness, madness and beauty.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eIn this concerto I imagine the solo flute as a protagonist in a drama, a bird-like character with equal measures of innocence and wisdom, like one of poet Emily Dickinson’s birds, emblematic of a hope that perches within. Over the course of the work, the solo flute brings the orchestra together and then leads it forward. The flutist comforts, mourns, yearns, pleads and dances.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eThe concerto is structured in three movements. The first, \u003cem\u003eAt Sea\u003c\/em\u003e, begins with us cast away in a vast expanse. The second, \u003cem\u003eTo Dance\u003c\/em\u003e, unites disparate elements, beginning with a festive sense of the macabre and ending with the parade-like energy of a big-band jazz march. Close in mind were the numerous world traditions that mourn death by celebrating life through dance. The final movement, \u003cem\u003eBeyond Waves\u003c\/em\u003e, begins far removed from the second. The conductor’s sweeping gestures send waves of breathing sound rippling across the stage. There is a processional quality to the music, with music of both violence and intimacy. By the end we find ourselves skyward bound, gently swaying in the quiet. As I wrote the ending, I remembered the hot air balloon ride I took two months prior over the pyramid of Teotichuacán and its Avenue of the Dead. I am afraid of heights and so I thought I would be terrified, yet I was instead mesmerized by the gracefulness and solitude of being captive to the whims of the wind. Despite the silence of their atmosphere, these places can feel full of a collective energy of those who were there before me. The initial creative spark for “the space of a door” came from my first visit to the Providence Athenaeum in December 2015. Upon entering this temple of books, built in 1836, one is welcomed by a grand sight of thousands of books brightly illuminated. I imagined the energy latent in all of the countless stories, the voices of authors and their characters who live in these books, each work a portal to another world. This was my starting point, providing a kind of scaffolding for the piece, which then expanded in other directions as I filtered my musical ideas through the emotions experienced during the months working on it, including a sense of a personal loss from the sudden death one of my closest mentors, composer Steven Stucky, and the daily hurt I have felt from news of the tragic series of world events.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Boston Symphony Orchestra invited me to compose this work as part of a festival celebrating Johannes Brahms, whose music has been important to me as a composer and performer. My piece pays homage to Brahms by taking inspiration from his Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2, particularly the rising minor third in the horns that opens Symphony No. 2. I begin my piece with the horns playing this interval together in harmony. The interval plays a key role throughout my work, both harmonically and structurally, returning at the end as a descending melodic third in a vastly different emotional context. Emotionally, the piece takes a journey through a series of interconnected worlds punctuated by sections featuring massive, asynchronous textures in the strings, where each player is asked to play individually within the collective, as if a soloist. These sections are set against moments of stillness and fragility. A fast, wildly agitated section lies at the middle of the work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“the space of a door” was commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and is dedicated to Music Director Andris Nelsons, Anthony Fogg and the members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra with my deepest admiration and gratitude. I have frequently found inspiration from the sense of a physical place, trying to recapture my emotional reaction to its atmosphere. When I enter a historic space, I am moved by the idea of being part of a shared past with those who have come before me. These feelings are different from those that I feel when I return to “personal” old places, which may not be as old but which feel like “home,” where a part of my identity was formed. And then there are places in pieces of music that can bring back memories more vibrantly than can anything in the physical world.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp id=\"yui_3_17_2_5_1481821072946_27039\"\u003e\u003cspan id=\"yui_3_17_2_5_1481821072946_27038\"\u003eThis piece is specifically in homage to spaces that can encapsulate for us these three kinds of places.  For myself, concert halls are spaces that can surround me with a sense of history, a feeling of being “home” and many vivid musical memories of concerts I have heard or performed there.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan id=\"yui_3_17_2_5_1481821072946_27114\"\u003eThe piece aims to engage with a concert hall’s sense of space, which can be at once intimate and also intensely public, by creating moments that listen intently to its quiet sounds and the simple beauty of its acoustic, but also to how its acoustic can surround and overwhelm us.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eCentral to my conception of the piece is the notion of revisiting through memory.
