The cello plays the part of the singer’s lover throughout, first appearing noticeably to the audience with a series of ascending trills, “Into my room, he reascends...” Of particular note is Vision Five when the voice and cello are in unison, this time, with the narrator singing the words of his partner (the cello).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e—Damien Geter (2022)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe year 2030 will mark 2000 years since the annunciation of The Virgin Mary. What would an annunciation look like in this new age? I believe this divine being could be conceived by a night of passion between men. \u003cem\u003eVisions of a Fever Dream\u003c\/em\u003e imagines the coming of a new deity, maturated by a beautiful young black man. A minuet meets the listener in the contrasting section as throwback to the stylized dance which appeared in many suites and early Classical symphonies. As a metal guitarist by training and temperament, I am inevitably inclined to try to write the most powerful, virtuosic, metal piece I can.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt so happens that modern electric guitar language has been strongly influenced by the string music of Antonio Vivaldi. Guitar pioneers such as Yngwie Malmsteen, Ritchie Blackmore, Michael Romeo, and Uli Jon Roth grew up on a classical music diet before becoming shred guitar icons. In Vivaldi's more virtuosic string music, such as the fast movements of the Winter and Summer concerti from the Four Seasons, the music's propulsive, motoric, hard-edged style bears a strong resemblance to some subgenres of contemporary metal.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cem\u003eTo wake and find the world still burning\u003c\/em\u003e takes the stark, energetic, moto perpetuo atmosphere of these most metal of baroque masterworks as its starting point, and refilters it through a contemporary metal sensibility, enhancing the hardness and aggression in any way possible.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis piece was composed a year into the pandemic. The title is born of my refracted memories of the early days of the global cataclysm, living in Manhattan and watching in real time as New York City quickly transformed into a scene from a dystopian sci-fi\/horror film.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMy deepest thanks to Adam Cicchillitti and Steve Cowan for making this project happen. In my Double Concerto, we begin alone with our protagonist, the violin, and the string orchestra, which acts throughout like a chorus from Ancient Greek theater, standing in solidarity with the soloists and narrating and personifying the internal or external struggles they face. The solo clarinetist does not enter until almost halfway through the work, but when it does, it unexpectedly alters the course of the concerto, perhaps also instilling hope when it is most needed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eThe work, cast in a single movement, follows an emotional transformation. I walked along a path that sits atop a ridge in the Italian countryside and is lined with trees on both sides: towering cypresses that stand tall and erect like ancient living pillars or guarding giants, and younger lindens that reach across to each other and gently entwine their branches above. The path stretches straight from a castle on one end across the ridge and through a gate to a forest beyond where the eye can see. Walking down this path evoked in me a sense of a procession through time. It was only after completing this work did I realize how much the experience of my daily walks had seeped into my conception of this concerto, both consciously and unconsciously.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eAt its heart,\u003cem\u003e Double Concerto No. 2\u003c\/em\u003e is an exploration of the intertwining relationships between discrete and opposing forces. I contemplate various acts of weaving-together: of one life with another, of the human and natural worlds, of stasis and movement, of the past and present, and of feelings such as love, loss, joy and remembrance.  While the concerto is symphonic in scope, its central focus is the two soloists and their interactions between each other and the orchestra.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eThe work is structured in five movements and a coda. The movements are woven together without pause by five interludes. In each interlude, waves of sound ripple and rustle across the ensemble, which often are “painted” by the conductor’s sweeping gestures. The two solo violists are often put into conversation with a consort of three violists from the orchestra. In movements II and V, this trio consort introduces quotations from music of the past, which are reimagined and reframed throughout the concerto: 16th-century composer John Dowland’s \u003cem\u003eFlow My Tears\u003c\/em\u003e (originally \u003cem\u003eLachrimae Pavan\u003c\/em\u003e, c. 1596 A.D.), and 11th-century composer Pérotin’s \u003cem\u003eViderunt Omnes\u003c\/em\u003e (“All the Ends of the Earth,” c. 1198). Dowland’s lamenting lute song was originally composed in the form of a pavane, which is a slow processional dance for couples that often precedes a faster, joyous dance. To me, this is what it means to play in an ensemble of any sort, or to play a team sport, or to be in a club, in a drama\/film production, on a tech crew, or on a debate team, etc. These are all examples of activities that are available in high school (and moving forward, in life), and I think an important reminder for us all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTherefore, Together begins with each section taking their turn playing a phrase in unison – together – where even though they are all playing the same notes, it takes a team effort to make it sound as one. Each section gets a phrase, and then they have to hand it off to the next. After this opening section, a rhythmical, upbeat, and tuneful section emerges, where each section — each player — is held responsible, for upholding their integral roles. Whether it be a melody, important rhythmical pulsing, or a bass line, the success of the team cannot happen without the practiced and executed contribution of each player.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe opening phrases eventually return (at letter H), but now they are all played simultaneously, proving once again that when all sections perform their parts together, the entire team (or company) can succeed. Much like the immortal and fearless Phoenix, these three women rose from the ashes of their past, reborn with a new hope for the future.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eWhen I began this work, I was determined to stay true to myself musically while continuing to challenge my compositional boundaries. I wanted my embrace of a new compositional approach to reflect and honor the vulnerability of a new life journey. This was my way of paying respect to the experiences of these extraordinary women. The resulting piece expresses pain in a raw and truthful light while serving as a larger commentary on the the cruel and unrelenting nature of the world. Most importantly, it intends to pay homage to individuals who choose to shoulder great burden in order to find a brighter path.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eWhen sharing their accounts, all three women acknowledged what’s done is done. Pain can transform into something new, and through the scorching flames and the resulting ashes, a new life can be found.  With the notion of rebirth in mind, the piece culminates in a turbulent rhythmic unity, the energy of which quickly melts into a prolonged and quiet sustain. This I felt symbolized a sign of togetherness and acceptance while also ushering in a new beginning.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\"\u003eWriting “Home” opened my eyes to the importance of community. Reflecting upon the momentous career of the exceptional romantic pianist and composer Clara Schumann, it was inevitable to be moved by her role as a female musician in the 19th century. As a contemporary female composer from Korea, studying Schumann’s life was an essential and significant path for me—it led me to a perspective in which I closely reevaluated my work and what it meant to be outside the status quo. I felt it was necessary to honor and dedicate this piece to her work, as well as interpret her artistic ideas into mine. To do this, I incorporated and quoted the form and melodic ideas from Schumann’s lyrical and ornate “Liebst du um Schönheit”. In contrast to my usual rhythm driven work, this composition for piano and strings is focused heavily on melody and harmony, and is embellished with florid texture and drama.
