During our second week of the program, all six immersion fellows stayed in a spacious bed and breakfast in the Catskills mountains called The Jeffersonian. Being one of two composers, and the only non-performing composer, I found that most of my days were spent listening to the other fellows practice. I wrote this piece in search of a quieter, peaceful, one-ness of sound, and the work is named after a small hole in the floor of the kitchen of The Jeffersonian. I was toying with programming the Suite for Solo Cello by Benjamin Britten when, around the same time, Harriet sent me a message saying she had just listened to that very piece for the first time and wanted to write a piece like it. The piece took shape over the next several months. I had initially asked for a piece for solo cello, but it was Harriet’s idea, quite early in the process, to add a second cello part. Perhaps you like to travel, or your life went through multiple changes, or you're just like me who enjoys the sun, water, and breeze as you go about your day. This Chinese character amalgamates two different characters, one that denotes the mind and the other the state of limitation or stagnancy. This idea of impasse in one’s mind is central to the concept of han in Korea, a feeling of un-resolved anger, grief, and regret that has been prolonged and accumulated over time. One of my greatest regrets is that I never studied with him privately, although his Music Since 1950 course is one of the best courses I have ever taken.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI’m ashamed to say that after leaving Connecticut I did not stay in touch as well as I would have liked, only a few posts on social media every so often. Still, his passing shook me to my core. Not a day goes by where I don’t think on him fondly, and wonder what music he still had to give us. I am constantly reflecting on the things he taught me, not only as a musician, but as a human.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDavid passed while I was already knee deep in composing this piece. After his passing I reworked many pas-sages as my grief got the better of me. It doesn’t really reflect the music I associate with him, but it does, in many ways, reflect my mindset as I wrote it. Pangs of pure grief give way to a cynical waltz which in turn finds acceptance in a meditative final section. David left us suddenly, and no one, so far as I know, was able to say goodbye. Both this piece and “Breath” reflect on the significance of breathing in 2020 and 2021, from loss of breath due to COVID-19 to protecting one’s breath via the Black Lives Matter movement to learning to breathe mindfully in order to endure catastrophic events. In an interview with PEM, Hussain described the five-second breath as “the perfect breath.” Breathing in for five seconds and out for five seconds reinvigorates us, gives us the oxygen we need, and helps connect our mind and body. The artist remarked, “I see things mathematically, and so for me, these paintings were a visual interpretation of what it would look like to breathe in and breathe out.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eBreathing Light\u003c\/em\u003e evokes this same translation, but to music. The piece opens by grounding the ensemble in the five-second breath, a series of five chords at 60 bpm (the tempo of seconds). Throughout the piece, the tenor conveys Huygens’ contemplation while the ensemble evokes Huygens’ invention of the pendulum clock and study of elastic collision through steady and misaligned rhythmic motives. Looking back, I ultimately didn’t detach myself from my typical stream-of-consciousness, through-composed method, like I had originally intended. Although the metal genre was the reason I became a bassist and I have grown to love it for many reasons, one of the pivotal features of the genre holds a special place in my heart: the overwhelming sense of community in hard-hitting rhythm and groove, and the freedom to listen and move to the music in a concert setting.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt had never really occurred to me that concert music could exist inside of the same space. I had previously imagined the concert hall in the way in which I experienced it as a young teenager: a place to be as quiet as possible while engaging in internal imagination, a musical space that lacks in chance or error, and a place to sit for hours, trying to find a way to adjust your position in your seat without being heard (we’ve all internally winced at a squeaking chair in a silent concert hall!).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI quickly realized that I was very wrong, and was delighted to find so much music that challenged or resisted this aspect, in performance spaces that encouraged engagement. I also realized that these traditions, though confusing to me at the time, had a lot of merit to them. Currents was one of the first pieces that I engaged in merging my own musical experiences, and lives through constant, hard-hitting rhythm.
