It started when my good friend and amazingly talented colleague, Lauren Snouffer commissioned me to set Paul Laurence Dunbar’s “A Golden Day.” Something in his words opened a door for me l, and from there I found myself increasingly inspired by his poetry and by the writing of his former wife, Alice Dunbar-Nelson.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat began with one song that I thought would never see the light of day, slowly grew into something much larger. I started to gradually build a body of songs over time, and every bit of this unexpected journey has been so inspiring and joyful. The poems are chronological, beginning with a story from my childhood and ending with the witness of a mentor’s final days. When paired together, my hope is that these poems ask you, “If division is indeed something learned, then was there a time when we did not understand what division was?
