The one I chose tells of how three doves created the world (the text,transliteration, and translation are all below). The text given below comes from a version taken from the Halychyna region in Western Ukraine. There are many different versions of this koliadka, and ethnomusicologists date its creation back to more than one thousand years ago (a version has been documented in the Chronicles of the Kyivan Rus’ state from the tenth century AD).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome \u003cem\u003ekoliadky\u003c\/em\u003e are now sung at Christmas, along with songs more intentionally Christian. In some regions of Ukraine, even today, the two holidays have blurry boundaries. The word in standard Ukrainian is Rizdvo; in some dialects, Christmas is still referred to as “Koliada”, as some will wish you “Khrystos rodyvsia! [Bazhaju tobi] veseliu koliadu!” (Christ is born! In one version of the myth, the Lion was sent to lure heroes to their doom, by using women as bait who would then turn into a lion when the hero would arrive at the lion's den. The lion was impervious to arrows due to its golden fur, but Hercules was eventually triumphant and was able to defeat the lion with his bare hands. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost.” Graham begins in celebration of discovery and hope (the what), then reflects upon the process (the how), and closes with a warning (the why). I must have been no older than seven or eight (certainly not old enough to realize that The Final Frontier is one of the worst Star Trek films), but the moment I saw the Enterprise on screen I was in love. As I got older, I came to realize that Star Trek is about a lot more than spaceships and phaser fights: Star Trek at its best looks at the problems of today through the lens of the future.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe music of Star Trek plays no small part in making it as successful as it has been and as I grew older, I fell in love with the franchise’s extraordinary music. Whether it’s the pointed brass of Alexander Courage and Fred Steiner’s scores for The Original Series or the sweeping strings of James Horner’s Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the music of Star Trek has played an enormous role in making me the composer I am today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo the Stars is a love letter to the music of Star Trek. While the solo trumpet parts are tailored to highlight Lucas’s work as a crossover artist (a decades-long member of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s trumpet section, Lucas is also an assistant professor in the Jazz Department of the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre \u0026amp; Dance), Pinery Park can be presented with multiple soloists.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePinery Provincial Park is a magical place. It is gorgeous. It has about 6 miles of shoreline on Lake Huron, with extremely rare ecosystems. It is also home to over 300 bird species. There are 10 walking\/hiking trails, a beautifully-kept bike trail, and ski and snow-shoeing trails for the winter months. There are camping sites that snuggle up to the base of the dunes, and one can simply pop over a dune and spend the day on the breathtaking beach.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMembership dues for the Friends of the Pinery organization go to preserving the park. The park has naturalists on hand to educate visitors on the varied ecosystems within the park, as well as an app with maps, resources, etc. My favorite page on the app is “Dynamic Dunes,” which has graphics illustrating the evolution and ecology of the park’s beaches. It details how the shoreline of the Pinery is a landscape that is always changing. While the Pinery usually gains sand each year, occasionally the levels of Lake Huron have risen and eroded material away: in some periods the Pinery grows; in others it gives back some of its sand to the lake. At the base of one case are two jade objects: a bi disc and a cong tube. The forms of the bi (circle) and cong (square) date back to the Stone Age in China; yet their original meaning, names, and functions are unknown. They gained importance in the Han dynasty, where they were at the core of the earliest Chinese books on philosophy, metaphysics, and cosmology. In the Zhou Li (Book of Rites), an ancient book compiled in the Zhou dynasty and amended in the Han dynasty, the cong is described as a symbol of earth, and the bi as a symbol of sky, or after world. The nephrite jade used by the ancient Chinese was extremely hard, and had to be worn down with an abrasive paste to achieve the desired shape and decoration. The ceremonial bi and cong jade objects were often buried with their owners.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThe cosmology of these objects is foreign to me because, as an American, I look at them from outside the Chinese culture. Their meanings are interpreted by my thought process as a means for creative inspiration, and an impetus for musical ideas. Shortly after my father passed away in February 2010, Michael Haithcock asked me to contribute a new piece to the University of Michigan Symphony Band 2011 Tour of China. Because of their rich infrastructure of marsh plants, algae, and insects, shorelines attract a tremendous array of birds, all of whom play important roles in maintaining watershed biodiversity. Any number of human impacts—erosion, deforestation, chemical waste—can upset the natural equilibrium of a shoreline, threatening the migratory patterns, habitat, and reproduction of the area’s birds. In the case of the Lake Erie shoreline, the focus of this work, avian populations plummeted with the rise of massive industrialization in the 19th and 20th centuries, suffocated by deforestation and depletion of prey. Only after sizeable climate activism in response to climate disasters—including the Cuyahoga River Fire of 1969, in which pollutants on the river caught fire and burned for hours—did the tide begin to turn for Erie, a renewed health especially signaled by one key factor: the reemergence of its bird populations.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cb id=\"docs-internal-guid-9167292d-7fff-2d18-0913-a763e437ce6b\"\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cem\u003eDouble Aviary\u003c\/em\u003e draws a three-movement arc through all of this. In First Aviary, we see an unspoiled image of the shore before the industrial intervention, built upon the song of an Erie native, the red-winged blackbird; in a second, unnamed movement, we follow the cycle of human error that never self-corrects until the weight of its short-sightedness is too grave to ignore; and the last movement, Second Aviary, depicts a (not-so-distant) future in which the watershed flourishes again in earnest, an intentional and thoughtful equilibrium, reviving the songs from native Erie birds. Sounds consist simultaneously of hauntingly beautiful sonorities and tense dissonances. Kuster achieves this dichotomy by pairing open-sounding perfect intervals (such as fourths and fifths) with a decorating semitone that clashes with both members of the initial intervals. The piece has a modified binary structure, with the unfurling events of the opening repeated again at the work’s midpoint, with even greater fervor. A cadre of percussion batter away unrelentingly, driving the work through its permutations until finally the piece implodes, shattering itself on the very rocks it had so immaculately colored.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKuster’s\u003cem\u003e Lost Gulch Lookout\u003c\/em\u003e is an outcropping of rock on the razor edge of civilization—set atop precipices near Boulder and the Denver metro area. The overall form of “Falling Up” consists of a series of rotations of the original thematic material, where the order, orchestration and character of the material vary in each rotation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"paragraph_style_7\"\u003eMy work is also inspired by the experience of watching a gust of wind blow the leaves off a tree, sending them twirling up into the air, and carrying them off into the distance.  The upwards gesture of the leaves “falling up” off the tree combines with Pollock’s tangled sea of swirls to create a flurry of intertwining upwards motion, ultimately propelling the autumn leaves off into the sky, where they sail away until they are out of sight. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"paragraph_style_7\"\u003eII. “Evening Glow” is inspired by a painting of the same name by nineteenth-century British painter John Atkinson Grimshaw. Delaney’s raincoat fragment overflows abstractly with swirls, rings, splotches, and lines of forest green, deep orange, bright yellow, fire-engine red, hazy gray, spacious white, peaceful azure, and deep ocean blue. Upon closer viewing, the seams and pockets of the cut-up raincoat are also visible, revealing that the fanciful artwork is the result of Delaney’s resourcefulness in the face of limited money and art supplies. As a fellow artist, I find Delaney’s unrelenting and restless impulse to be creative even when he lacked proper materials to be almost as inspiring as the painting itself. Although Brilliant Brushstrokes is tightly constructed around only a few melodic gestures, the music constantly cycles through changes in instrumental texture, density, harmony, and energy. Musical phrases are often cut-off abruptly with a quick down-up gesture that I view as related to the stitched seams on the raincoat. While writing this piece I was thinking about desire lines, desire itself, hiking in the Smoky Mountains, Rachel Carson’s love letters, Emily Dickinson’s Master Poems, emotional longing, Impressionism, synchronicity, free will, love, and zigzagging lyricism.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe piece has three peaks, each a bit bigger than the last. In my mind, I relate these climaxes metaphorically to three stages on a mountain hike. The first peak reflects the feeling of excited anticipation when you can see the summit from the base of the hike. The second peak reflects that feeling on a hike when you have been going for a while and reach what seems like it could be a grand overlook until you realize you are only about half-way there and have a lot of mountain left to climb. After a great deal of exertion, you finally reach the third peak, the most beautiful part of the entire hike and bask in the realization that it was all worth the effort. Recalling the joy and exhilaration he felt while discovering brain cells under his microscope, he wrote:\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLike the entomologist hunting for brightly colored butterflies, my attention hunted in the flower garden of grey matter for cells of delicate and elegant forms: the mysterious butterflies of the soul, whose flapping wings may someday—who knows?—clarify the secret of mental life.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhen I first read this text, I immediately knew I wanted to set it for singers, which I did—for small choir with chamber ensemble—in the winter of 2017-18. I also loved the idea of using the same musical material in a purely instrumental piece for band by taking Cajal’s imagery and emotion and translating them into instrumental color and expression. The futuristic story describes a computer-controlled house, in which robots perform a myriad of tasks such as cooking breakfast, cleaning house, and telling time. In Bradbury’s future, all humans have been destroyed by a nuclear bomb, and this house is the only building that still stands amidst the rubble. Nonetheless, the house’s robots remain dedicated to their duties, even in the absence of the house’s human occupants. As the author puts it, “...inside, the house was like an altar with nine thousand robot attendants, big and small, servicing, attending, singing in choirs, even though the gods had gone away and the ritual was meaningless.” Despite this tragedy, Bradbury’s futurist prose remains characteristically exuberant in describing these household robots—a tension which calls to mind the satirical ebullience of Stanley Kubrick’s Cold War satire \u003cem\u003eDr. Strangelove\u003c\/em\u003e. My piece lives in the same brazenly ecstatic spirit as Bradbury’s story and Kubrick’s film. While an unconformity technically describes a gap in time of several hundred million years between rock strata, \u003cem\u003eGreat Unconformity\u003c\/em\u003e is more broadly inspired by (1) the beauty and diversity of the American West and (2) the concert band as a metaphor for this beauty and diversity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe landscapes of the West are both incredibly scenic and hostile, and the communities which have formed out of this shared confrontation with survival are remarkably diverse. The popular 20th-century view of the American West, inextricably linked to the cinematic Western, is of a place filled with conflict and hostility, where different kinds of people are constantly clashing in their pursuit of resources. By contrast, I view the unified variety (or, unconformity) of coexisting peoples and landscapes as the defining characteristic of the contemporary West.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe concert band, with its many types of instruments and sounds, is an especially apt metaphor for community and the value that comes from different kinds of people coming together to work towards a common goal. A band is not just a sound making machine; crucially, it is a diverse group of individual people who have banded together to make music. In one sense, musicians in a concert band need to be independent nonconformists who can play their parts by themselves, but in another sense they must conform to the tempo and mood and volume of the rest of the group in order for the musical outcome to be coherent and meaningful. In this novel, each chapter is part of a different sub-novel. A crime novel is right next to a memoir which is right next to a science fiction story which is right next to a romance novel. The interaction between each of these layers creates a large and hugely dramatic narrative. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSpinning Yarns \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003eis a collection of diverse narrative threads stitched together into a dramatic musical tapestry. Like an Atwoodian multi-layered novel, the music oscillates between dreamlike uncertainty, chaotic heroism, sarcastic dancing, pensive sleepwalking, airy lyricism, and climactic hubris. Instead of outcasts, it focuses on the thrill of incredibly choreographed theater pieces centered on acrobatic dancing. It's interesting to see how this has evolved over the decades. What has stayed the same is the audience's adoration for these mind-blowing athletes who push the body to its limits in the most artistic way possible. Rather than highlighting these people's differences, we look at them for the spectacle they can provide us. This piece takes us through a day at the circus, starting with the ringmaster pumping us up. We feel the nostalgia of being a child seeing all of this, with the wide variety of performers, eventually leading us to observe the beauty of an acrobat suspended in the air. I imagine them ascending in a hoop and floating like a star. As the day continues, we build towards the grand finale, with two acrobats flying in the air to achieve one last dangerous feat - diving through a ring of fire into the net while spinning like a cannonball to massive success. Like all people at all times, they were confronted each day by the present...with \u003cstrong\u003ethe significant, the trivial, the profound, and the fatuous\u003c\/strong\u003e all tangled together.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI first read this quote in 2019, a time when I thought I understood what it meant to feel uncertain about the future. Americans faced a barrage of shocking headlines, from political chaos to violence, and I was navigating my own transitions—career changes, a new relationship, loss, and self-discovery. Looking back, I realize how naive that was. Just months later, the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the world, and local events in the Twin Cities sparked global protests. Today, with wars, scandals, and climate crises abound, it’s clear that uncertainty is timeless. In times of uncertainty—and this current moment ought to qualify—I find history to be instructive and comforting in that it reminds me that we are all small in the grand scheme of things. Our lives hold meaning because they matter to us, but to worry too much about what is outside of our control is ultimately foolish, since it is really impossible to know where things will lead.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn composing this symphony, my goal is not to suggest that we should not take into consideration the future implications of our actions, but rather remind all of us that the lives that are right in front of us, today, are gifts that should be cherished.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"\u003eArranger's notes\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI first met Isaac Mayhew shortly after the Millennium Composers Initiative was formed. I heard this news while having my dinner at Hells Kitchen after a long day at Juilliard. Even though I did not know the individuals who died and were moaning on the TV, I felt such a strong connection, much stronger than any other disaster news of other country, mostly because they were speaking in my first language, Korean. I had wanted to write a piece for the victims for a long time, but I could not find a suitable ensemble for it. In the piece, a traditional Korean children’s tune is quoted. The theme gets juxtaposed in many different ways; a cantas firmus, a melodic line, and harmonic line. Towards the end of my process of my work, I also experienced a great loss in my family. My grandfather passed away and that actually was the first death in my family after I grew up enough to remember. I can admit that before that incident, I never truly understood what death meant. The piece started with the idea of my country’s great loss, but then it ended with a huge loss from my family. This piece has brought me a lot of emotional struggle as I was writing and it certainly was a very challenging piece for me. People with multiple intersecting identities have a higher risk of developing mental illnesses and also have a higher chance of experiencing violence due to biases, systemic barriers, stigmas, and lack of access to adequate resources.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA unique issue that I have experienced because of my intersections is tokenism. There was a commission that I was asked to do a few years ago regarding the murder of a black man just months prior. While initially honored to be asked to create an original work surrounding such a major event, I declined to do it because I did not want to relive the trauma of seeing someone like me being murdered by the same people we're supposed to call in case of emergency. When asked why I declined, I explained why it is unethical to even think of asking one of your only black student composers to relive such a traumatic event, regardless of intent. I know that person has a good heart and good intentions in mind so I did not take offense to their questions at all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother thing I would like to share is that I did not learn what the term microaggression meant until I got to college. For those unfamiliar, a microaggression is defined as a subtle act of discrimination toward a minority. It is subtle enough to make you question yourself, yet audacious enough to make you think twice about what was just said or done to you. At the time, my school had also been among the top most unfriendly universities to their LGBTQ+ students. I'm sure you can start to picture how students like me felt every day. This is just one example of how our intersections play such a major part in our lives. Despite all adversities that I felt and experienced, I shared my coming out story and overall perspective with news stations around the city. Of course, I heard and read the nasty comments that people make, but I also cherished the words of my loved ones in my community. We cannot and will NOT be intimidated into erasure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVisibility and representation are incredibly important to me because we need to SEE that people that look and act just like us can be successful. The originally intended instrumentation was for a wind quintet with percussion, but as the work evolved it became readily expanded to a small band ensemble of mixed instruments. “Mandjani Dance” really takes it name from a dance tradition in West Africa region of Guinea, Mali, Senegal and Gambia. However, variations of the dance, though with different names, are common across the continent, especially in the eastern sub region of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, and the south-central areas of Zambia and Zimbabwe. The work opens with a chant, that is quickly followed by an energetic dance celebration. The repeated sections are important, as they help accentuate a communal dance of aspiration. I met with the band, heard them play, answered their questions about being a composer, and invited them to tell me what their band experiences meant to them so that I could create a special piece inspired by their stories. They sent me photos of their favourite local vistas so I could see what the horizon looked like from their perspective. I was able to incorporate these wonderful sources of inspirations, as well as a variation of the melody from “Oh What A Beautiful Morning” (from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Oklahoma!)
