For the Sleepwalkers, Jungyoon Wie
for narrator, violin, cello, and piano
As a composer, I read this poem from the perspective of a creator. Creating music requires traveling to an unfamiliar, vulnerable space, which I try every day in my creative process. Going on this journey can seem very daunting because it means throwing myself to the realm of uncertainty and the possibility of a failed attempt. It feels like I’m waving my arms with eyes closed and trying to find something while not knowing what that is.
The poem For the Sleepwalkers describes what happens when I finally have completed this travel. It is as if my heart left my body and I gained access to a space where everything flows.
The experience of the poem, I think, is for anybody who can connect with their unconscious. It is fluid, open, and bold, which reminds me of Jorja Fleezanis.
