I was asked by conductor Judith Clurman to write a Thanksgiving Hymn. The very morning I began work on the piece, my father entered into Hospice care. He had given a valiant 13-year fight against prostate cancer, and his treatment options had been exhausted. I was fortunate to share 14 days with him as he slowly descended into death. I wrote Home while on a plane from Boulder, Colorado to my home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on the day we said our last goodbye, three days before he passed away. The piece is about compassion, love, warmth, and tolerance—the very foundation of life my father Jim taught me well. James Teigen Peterson died peacefully in the early morning of February 2, 2010. I miss you, dad.
