Banner Year, Griffin Candey (2026) 3'30"
for wind ensemble

Banner Year (2026) is a celebration of big, joyful, shattering change. There is a conflict of messaging: when facing pain or tragedy, we are often told that things change quickly—but when repairing, when rebuilding, when addressing systems, we are told that change must be slow, incremental. While there is some truth in that dichotomy (it is easier to unmake than to
make,) history teaches us that the work of dedicated and collaborative voices, those willing to weather the questions that any change brings, can bring about a new world virtually overnight. When we hope for change—when we work towards it—we do not always have to settle for the slow drip: when needed, we can be the flood.

Instrumentation: Piccolo, Flute 1-2, Oboe 1-2, Clarinet 1-3, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon 1-2, Contrabassoon (opt.), Soprano Saxophone, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Horn 1-4, Trumpet 1-3, Trombone 1-3, Euphonium, Tuba, Timpani, Percussion 1-5, Double Bass (opt.)
