for alto saxophone and piano
Kid Gloves (2022) was written as a meditation on the difference between self-confidence and self-compassion. While self-confidence often manifests externally, self-compassion is a largely internal process. It is the ability to self-assess, to recognize our flaws and shortcomings—and to love ourselves and forgive ourselves regardless. Antithetically, the constant forward momentum of confidence (especially a Westernized, hypermasculine concept of “confidence,” tinged with bravado) often precludes the space we need for honest self-compassion, pressing on and on with no room for reflection. Kid Gloves is meant to push against that momentum, encouraging us to be still for long enough to see ourselves plainly.
