Starlings, Jungyoon Wie (2025) 11'30"
for solo string quartet and string orchestra

When I go for a walk, sometimes I find a beautiful sight of birds traveling together. Their flocking behavior creates cloud-like shapes that are constanly moving and transforming, which takes my breath away.  In Starlings, I try to capture this moment. Three-bar melody is repeated at different speeds over 10 minutes by different sections of the orchestra. This phasing effect imitates the shape of bird travel. Harmonies are formed depending on where each part is at the melody.

Orchestral instrumentation: solo string quartet; string orchestra

Co-commissioned by The Next Festival of Emerging Artists with support from Justus & Elizabeth Schlichting, and by Summermusik with resident ensemble Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra.
