Ando: light against shade was inspired by the buildings of architect Tadao Ando. Ando’s use of the hardest of materials—concrete, steel and glass—can appear severe, yet at the same time surprisingly gentle. For Ando, “architectural materials are not limited to wood or concrete that have tangible forms, but go beyond to include light and wind—which appeal to our senses.” (Tadao Ando, Space Design, June 1921). Ando: light against shade was premiered at the Composers Conference and Chamber Music Center at Wellesley College in August 2003, with Efrain Guigui conducting.
