folding planes : frosted panes, Kristin Kuster (2015) 13'
for violin, cello, vibraphone, and piano

The impetus for the music of composer Kristin Kuster's folding planes : frosted panes is The Light Court of Philadelphia's Barnes Foundation building, designed by architects Tod Williams and Billie Tsien. Written for violin, cello, vibraphone, and piano, the piece celebrates two architectural design elements of the Light Court's vast atrium: its ceilings and its floor. Capping the soaring ceilings of The Light Court—the social heart of the building—is the Light Canopy, an acid-etched glass box which sculps, diffuses and filters in natural light that dances throughout the Space. Taken from the renovation of Coney Island Boardwalks in Brooklyn, NY, the rich and warm reclaimed ipe wood floor boards are laid here in their new home in a new counterpoint; having brought with them memory of their former function and days in the sunlight.

Instrumentation: Violin, cello, vibraphone, and piano
