Cynthia (String Orchestra)
Duration: 18'
Cynthia, Nicky Sohn (2026) 18'
concerto for solo viola and string orchestra
Cynthia began as a chamber work inspired by the life of Cynthia, a woman whose quiet strength, generosity, and enduring impact continue to be felt by those who new and loved her. Although I never had the privilege of meeting Cynthia myself, I came to know her through the stories shared by violist Tonya Burton, whose friendship, trust, and unwavering belief in my music made this work possible.
What began as an intimate portrait has since grown into this viola concerto, expanding in both duration and instrumentation while remaining rooted in the same belief that a life continues to resonate through the memories it leaves behind. This transformation would not have been possible without Tonya's artistic vision and extraordinary generosity throughout every stage of the creative process. Her musicianship, insight, and constant encouragement shaped this work as profoundly as the notes themselves.
While Cynthia is dedicated to one remarkable woman, it is equally dedicated to those who carry the memories of the people they love. It is my hope that listeners may find echoes of someone in their own lives within this music, and be reminded that love, memory, and human connection have a way of enduring beyond time itself.
