Founder and Executive Director
Joshua DeVries
Joshua DeVries is a musician and entrepreneur who founded Just a Theory Press. A cellist and music theorist by training, his company publishes new music and provides preparation services to some of the top ensembles and composers in the country. He (along with his team of editors) is in high demand as a copyist and editor, specializing in contemporary opera.
A frequent performer of new music, Josh regularly commissions and performs works from the last several years. In addition to recent concerto appearances with the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, he has performed with the Ying Quartet, International Contemporary Ensemble, and JACK Quartet. He is currently recording a solo album of new music for solo cello, but in the meantime, he can be heard playing Carlos Simon’s Lickety Split on the album “My Ancestor’s Gift” as well as on John Luther Adams’s Sila: The Breath of the World. Josh’s former teachers include Richard Hirschl and Richard Aaron; he completed his PhD in Music Theory from the University of Michigan and is working on a book about George Crumb’s string quartet Black Angels.
