Virtuosic, character-driven, and harmonically-focused, “Ballads” is a short piece for three string basses. Like three individuals trying to tell the same story, the basses shuffle through material all pointed in the same direction, suggesting new language at one moment and expressing impatience at the next. Thus, three perspectives on the same story, or ballad, are performed. “Ballads” was written while I was a part of the New York Youth Symphony’s Composition Program.
