De profundis was commissioned by the Zurich Chamber Singers and premiered in the chapel at the Grossmünster church in Zurich, Switzerland on March 19, 2016. The text, drawn from the Seven Penitential Psalms, consists of short fragments which are assembled to form a mosaic texture. Throughout most of the piece, each section of the ensemble sings different fragments, making De profundis an impression of the psalms and a meditation on the themes of desperation and redemption.
