Delight of Angels, Tina Davidson (1999) 18'
for string quartet

Delight of Angels for string quartet was commissioned by the Fleisher Art Memorial as part of Davidson’s three-year residency in 1999, and was written specifically for the talents of the Cassatt Quartet.
“What would it be like, I have often wondered, to be in a state of continual joy, in the delight of the moment?  Celestial beings, according to both Jewish and Christian tradition, reflect back the glory of God in word and song, worshiping ceaselessly.  They are absorbed in the contemplation of the divine; the Seraphim chant Hebrew prayers endlessly, in the vibrations of love.  And they dance!  Theodore of Cyrrhus describes angels in a state of perpetual dancing, as one of rejoicing with the whole being.”
