Monument, Nicky Sohn (2024) 6'
for string quartet

Monument was commissioned with the generous support of the East Aldine ARTS Council to celebrate the unveiling of their new sculpture. East Aldine is a town in the northeast Greater Houston area. It may not be the most well-known town in Texas, but it is rich in history and culture, characterized by the warmth and diligence of its people. !e sculpture represents the past, present, and future of the town. I wanted to focus on the importance of looking back to appreciate our origins and what we have today, while also recognizing that looking back signifies the end of an era. Additionally, it encourages us to look toward the future with the utmost hope and dreams. In my own life, I have recently experienced significant changes, finding stability, support, and love more than ever before. Reflecting on the challenges and paths I have traversed has been enlightening. When we look back, we often romanticize what we once had, even if those times were difficult, leaving us with a bittersweet feeling. To fully embrace what lies ahead, one must learn to let go. Monument is inspired by the feelings of acceptance, letting go, and embracing the past, present, and future.
