Of the Hummingbirds, Josh Trentadue (2025) 5'30"
for flute or piccolo and xylophone
Inspired by the works of Olivier Messiaen and Dmitri Shostakovich, as well as Hilda Conkling's poem "Humming-Bird", this virtuosic duet evokes the mysterious, energetic, and surreal nature of the hummingbird. Everything from the hummingbird's physical capabilities to its elusive nature is questioned and admired in Conkling's poem - this piece shares these sentiments through balancing melodic passages with rhythmic bursts, both of which guide each other from beginning to end.
