Ribbon Earth, Kristin Kuster (2008) 12'
for flute, clarinet, bassoon, and string quartet

Ribbon Earth is inspired by Missouri artist Brent Collins’s sculpture, Pax Mundi. The sculpture is made from one continuous bronze ribbon, which spirals into an abstract sphere. Collins’s use of the hardness of bronze appears both severe and delicate at once. The music of Ribbon Earth is comprised of three continuous sections—fast, slow, fast—with swooping melodic gestures, reflecting both the heaviness and softness of Collins’s sculpture.
