In the depths of my creative process, I am nocturnal in every sense of the way. The hours when others find solace in sleep are the very moments when my mind comes alive with ideas and melodies. I am drawn to the quiet solitude of the night, where my thoughts roam freely, scattered and fastmoving. It is during these sleepless nights that I often find myself sitting in the corner of my apartment, surrounded by random thoughts and memories, and I begin to write short melodies that encapsulate these sentiments.
Writing for a single-line instrument presents a unique challenge for me, as my music tends to be harmonically charged and driven. However, when I had the opportunity to collaborate with the incredibly talented violinist, Jacob Schafer, I saw it as an intriguing opportunity to reflect and write upon these short melodies— solo thoughts, solo music. Jacob's beautiful and sensitive way of playing inspired me to explore this uncharted territory.
The Sound of Sleepless Nights is a collection of melodies that ponder upon the random thoughts I have experienced in the dead of night. Each miniature encapsulates a different aspect of my nocturnal wanderings— it could be the ache of missing someone, the recollection of a specific incident, the overarching mood of introspection, or even a cherished children's song from my Korean upbringing.
Each movement represents a different aspect of my nocturnal wanderings. I. Rainy Night Reverie: Memories of You reflects on cherished moments with a past lover, while II. Rainy Reminders: The Umbrella explores the bittersweet symbolism of a gift left behind. III. School Bell pays homage to a beloved children's song from my Korean upbringing, while IV. April Fool's Day humorously portrays the ironic timing of our meeting. Finally, V. Moonlit Whispers emanates a sense of calm and readiness to let go amidst the serene solitude of nature.
The Sound of Sleepless Nights presents the contemplative atmosphere of my nocturnal world, where the power of solo thoughts manifests into the delicate and evocative realm of solo music.
