Uneven Flow was written for pianist Jonathan Mak as part of his commissioning project, which aimed to explore how monumental world events impact artistic expression and the music composed around these events, particularly in response to the large wars occurring in recent years. The commissioning theme was broad, not limited to wars alone; composers were invited to explore ideas of conflicts, struggles, and the emotional impacts of these events.
In approaching this commission, I aimed to create something virtuosic and showy—an absolute privilege when writing for an award-winning pianist like Jonathan, who possesses such monstrous technique and musicality. The piece embodies the idea of how flow and safety are disrupted by conflicts between countries, influencing everyone's daily lives and causing discomfort and interruptions in our routines.
The title Uneven Flow was inspired by the song Even Flow by Pearl Jam, which describes the experience of homelessness and the disruptions in life. Just as Eddie Vedder's lyrics reflect the unpredictable and often harsh realities faced by a homeless man, this piece reflects the unpredictable disturbances that affect our daily lives due to global conflicts. While it addresses serious themes, it is also a concert showpiece designed to celebrate Jonathan's incredible abilities as a pianist.
