Precious Metals (2019) was written for Danielle Gonzalez for her one-woman percussion show, Natural Beauty, which examines the undeniable impact humans have on the earth’s environment. This work was inspired by the sound of metal and glass objects. Both timbres’ resonance and fragility are used to meditate on humans’ use of earth’s rare natural elements, while the plastic cup and paper included in the piece remind the listener of our day-to-day environmental damage through acts like littering. Many thanks to Danielle for premiering this work and for her dedication to contemporary music for social causes.
