Chiroptera, Jennifer Oliverio (2025)
for brass choir or brass band
Chiroptera was commissioned in 2025 by Dr. Dakota Corbliss, Assistant Professor of Horn at Appalachian State University and Director of the Appalachian State Brass Choir. This work was inspired by bats' use of echolocation when navigating the air at night. Bats will emit sounds and then use the bounce back from the sound waves to piece together their environment. In this piece, you'll hear fragments of repeated melodies, sonar-like sounds, and sharp rhythms to emulate those effects.
Instrumentation:
Brass choir: Trumpet 1-2, flugelhorn, horn 1-2, trombone 1-3, euphonium, tuba
Brass band: Soprano cornet, solo cornet, repiano cornet, cornet 2-3, flugelhorn, solo horn, horn 1-2, baritone 1-2, trombone 1-2, bass trombone, euphonium, Eb bass, Bb bass, timpani, percussion 1-3
